Words: Heidi Fuller-LoveProducer: Bianca Farmakis

Lured by world-class cultural sites and lovely islands lapped by turquoise seas, 30 million tourists arrived in Greece in 2019. Greeks, who are well aware of the country’s charms, believe there’s no better place in the world for a holiday.

To find the best hideaways away from the tourist crowds, you need insider knowledge. Here’s how to go Greek.

If Mykonos is a magnet for the rich and famous, its fellow Cycladic island of Kimolos is its antithesis. Favoured by Athenians in high season, this bijou atoll is popular for its pristine beaches that are among the best in Greece.

This verdant island is the Cyclades’ secret. Greeks head further along the coast to the less-crowded sands of Mikri Vigla, or head for the hills to visit a cluster of tiny mountain villages.

Naxos

This picturesque region framed by the Astrakas mountain range is home to some of the best ski resorts, but Greeks flock here to hike the Vikos Gorge and marvel at the lake of Drakolimni, home to the Hellenic Loch Ness monster.

Zagori

Greeks say that Crete is the friendliest isle of all. The east is more low key and famed for its perfect horseshoe-shaped, sandy bay and small taverns serving heaped plates of dakos and other Cretan specialties.

Food is a major preoccupation for holidaying Greeks. With a raft of succulent, local culinary treats – ranging from spicy San Michali cheese to cured pork lountza – combined with a bijou opera house, Syros ticks all the boxes.

This bite-sized island is an intriguing east-meets-west melting pot, combining the best of Greek hospitality with mountainous landscapes, colourful villages and Turkish-influenced food.
