Most of McDonald's menu items are icons in themselves, but it's never been completely clear which dish is the absolute best… until now.

1. Cheeseburger

Australia completely lost its pickles when we recently mentioned Maccas was selling cheeseburgers at 50c a pop, so this is the deserving winner of the top prize.

2. French fries

Whether you like your fries on their own, playing second fiddle to a burger or dunked into your soft serve (yes, it's a thing), they're a fast food must-have.

3. Hash brown

When McDonald's revealed that its top-selling side for 2021 was not their French fries but the humble hash brown, we were shook.

4. McFlurry

This one really depends on the flavour that Maccas has on offer at the time. Bubblegum McFlurry? Meh. Smarties McFlurry? NOW you're talking.

5. Chicken McNuggets

Chicken McNuggets were the hero of the Happy Meal when we were kids… but now as adults we still can't seem to grow out of our chicken nugget habit.

6. Big Mac

Aussies are still McLovin' this stackable winner — in fact, it's the second most-purchased burger after the cheeseburger.

7. Thickshake

We don't even want to hear about strawberry and chocolate flavours. Vanilla is the ultimate McShake!

8. Chocolate sundae

When the machine isn't broken, these make a great cheap treat on the go. With the fudge sauce, obvs. And chips for dunking, if that's your thing.
