Costume designer Janty Yates has been roundly praised for her work on Ridley Scott's new high fashion epic, House of Gucci. The highly anticipated film, with a stellar cast and sumptuous Italian vistas in focus, is truly and unsurprisingly a knockout for its wardrobe.

From Lady Gaga's multiple turns in plunging Saint Laurent skirt suits to Jared Leto's elephant cord Norfolk two pieces in candied shades of magenta and cobalt, the woman behind the magic is celebrated costume designer Janty Yates, of Gladiator, American Gangster, and The Martian fame.

Here, she reveals her favourite men's looks from the film

Paolo Gucci's Pink Jumbo Cord Suit

“The Atollini Brothers made all the suits for Paolo Sorrentino's 2013 film The Great Beauty, which is one of the most wonderfully tailored films I’ve ever seen. The problem was, we had to wait for the suits, because the brothers hand make everything in Naples.”

Paolo Gucci'sBlue Check Suit

“We went very over the top with Jared's wardrobe. His character Paolo was one of the worst dressed men I’d ever googled. The looks are really appalling, the Atollini Crothers told me that he is ‘the dandy’s dandy’, so we went for horizontal stripes, big blooming ties, and massive checks.”

Rodolfo Gucci's Neckerchief

“Basically all of the Guccis, apart from Paolo, had their suits made on Savile Row. The suit Jeremy Irons is wearing as Rodolpho Gucci, is cut from pale lemon yellow velvet. Jeremy loves a scarf [and] will wear a scarf no matter what. The neckerchief was a bit of both.”

Maurizio Gucci's Ski look

“This was the first photo released from our shoot, and the response was extraordinary. The Arran sweater has its own website and Instagram! People dressed up like this photo for Halloween! We had 10 different sweaters, and we tried them all. This particular one fit [Adam Driver] best.”

Aldo Gucci's Wide Lapelled Suits

“It was very hard to avoid referencing films Al Pacino’s starred in, because everything in culture relates back to something he's done. But Ridley did this drawing of Aldo Gucci with a jacket that didn’t match anything but he looks spiffing: unintentional but intentional.”

Maurizio Gucci's Assassination Suit

“We had eight shirts, jackets, and trousers for the assassination scene, though we probably didn’t use more than two. Everything had to be repeated - Adam had 25 suits and about ten jackets and Zegna made him ten suits and five jackets. He had 44 appearances, so he had to have a lot of suits.”

Maurizio Gucci's Sartorial Journey

“There’s a very gentle arc in Maurizio's style across his 20 years played out. We start with him wearing Fair Isle sweaters with a blazer. Then we made him look more sophisticated, and towards the end, velvet suits. We were getting [Driver] to look like he was spending money on clothes.”

“Working on the House of Gucci was a kind of a rollercoaster… It was the most amazing experience to work with the best actors in the world and to work with Ridley Scott. How  lucky am I?!”
