It’s no secret that the world of professional sport is often very well paid. And while our local athletes rake in decent earnings, their salaries don’t hold a candle to those in Europe, South America and the United States—where the audiences are larger, and so is the money.

Revered financial publication Forbes has now released its most recent annual roundup of the 5 highest-paid athletes. Find out who topped the list here.

5. Stephen Curry

The Golden State Warrior has the richest contract in the NBA, netting him more than $60 million per year, while he's one of Under Armour's biggest endorsees and, like many of his NBA contemporaries, owns his own production company.

4. Neymar

Neymar's contract with PSG is, like his team-mate in number 1, one of the biggest in world soccer, while he also earned a huge financial boost by switching sportswear sponsors from Nike to Puma.

Sport: BasketballCountry: Brazil2022 salary: $131 million

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo has a huge contract with Manchester United, but also takes home nearly $80 million a year through deals with Nike, Herbalife and Clear shampoo, and investments in Tatel restaurants and ZujuGP.

Sport: SoccerCountry: Portugal2022 salary: $162 million

2. LeBron James

The primary driver of James' off-court earnings is his production company Springhill, which he sold a significant minority stake in last year. He also has endorsement deals with Nike and Crypto.com, and investments in Tonal and sports tech startup StatusPRO.

Sport: BasketballCountry: United States2022 salary: $170 million

1. Lionel Messi

The GOAT was kept off 2021's top spot by Conor McGregor, but this year reclaims his crown. Messi's contract with PSG brings in over $90 million a year, while his lifetime deal with Adidas, plus endorsements with Budweiser, Pepsi and Socios keep the paychecks rolling in.

Big spenders.
