Taliban’s latest TV rule marks new blow to women’s freedom

Women in Afghanistan have been banned from appearing in TV dramas and soap operas under the Taliban's new "religious guidelines".

It is the militant group's latest measure curbing individual freedoms after taking over the war-torn country, following the departure of US and allied forces in August.

The restrictive guidelines feature eight new rules, which include calling for women working as TV journalists to wear Islamic hijabs while presenting reports.

Films considered against the principles of Sharia, Islamic law and Afghan values have been banned, along with footage of men exposing intimate body parts, entertainment shows insulting religion or considered offensive to Afghans, films promoting foreign cultural values and most foreign dramas with female leads.

The new rules follow the Taliban prohibiting almost all education for girls and women, and ordering them to stay at home. Some women residing in the capital, Kabul, were told to come into work only if they were unable to be replaced by a man.

Restrictions on women working and girls studying are "temporary", according to the Taliban. This is despite no end date for change being in sight.
