Socceroos book World Cup spot

After 20 games and 1,008 days, Australia’s long and difficult journey to qualify for the 2022 World Cup came down to a penalty shoot-out.

The Socceroos delivered one of their best performances of the qualifying campaign but failed to capitalise on Peru’s sloppy play in the regulation 90 minutes.

The world number 22 came out firing in extra time, almost breaking the deadlock when substitute Edison Flores hit the post with a header.

Coach Graham Arnold made the stunning decision to substitute veteran keeper and captain Mathew Ryan for Andrew Redmayne once the match was sent to a shoot-out.

Stress levels were high when after five penalties apiece it went into sudden-death with substitute Awer Mabil scoring Australia’s sixth penalty.

Redmayne had his nation's hopes riding on his shoulders but went on to save Peru’s penalty, sending Australia to a fifth consecutive World Cup.

Coach Graham Arnold was lost for words after their iconic victory.

Striker Mitch Duke couldn’t contain his excitement after the victory, dropping a cheeky f-bomb in his post match interview.
