Aussie golf gun scores record $2.5m payday

Golf

Minjee Lee has become just the third Australian to win the US Women’s Open, storming home to a massive four-shot win at Pine Needles.

The 26-year-old ruthlessly converted a three-stroke, 54-hole lead into the second major title of her career, following on from the Evian Championship in 2021.

No Australian had won the US Women’s Open since Lee’s idol, Karrie Webb, went back-to-back in 2001, with the latter victory also coming at Pine Needles.

Jan Stephenson, who won in 1983 for her third and final major, is the only other Australian to claim the US Women’s Open.

In victory, Lee takes home the biggest individual money prize in women’s golf of $1.8 million (A$2.5m) after the US Open purse almost doubled in 2022 from $5.5 million to $10 million.

Lee finished the major at 14-under, 271 — the lowest strokes total in tournament history — well ahead of runner-up Mina Harigae (nine-under).

After the round Lee said she was in shock she had secured the win and fulfilled a childhood dream.

It’s just super, super special and such a great honour. It’s been my dream since I was a little girl, it’s the one that I’ve always wanted to win.

— Minjee Lee

The world No.4 has now won two of the past four majors, while she claimed a top-five finish at last year’s British Open.
