Our hospitality venues are desperate | The Australian

Job vacancies in the hospitality sector have left business owners scrambling to plug vital workforce holes ahead of the Christmas period and industry leaders are calling on the government to lift migration caps.

suggests 200,000 more staff are needed Australia-wide to help the industry rebuild from lockdowns and closed borders, according to industry employment platform Barcats.

The most sought after positions were for kitchen staff (6500), baristas (6000), wait staff (5500) and bartenders (4500).

New data

Barcats CEO Jeffrey Williams said it was time to “call in the reinforcements” and increase migration capacities, or risk hospitality crashing over the busy summer period.

It has been a long and challenging few years for this sector and we are desperate to see pubs and clubs, bars and restaurants, cafes and hotels thriving again. But the reality is, if we don’t get workers back, customers will suffer.

The Albanese government announced the permanent migration cap would increase from 160,000 to 195,000 for this financial year, following the Jobs Summit in August.

That won't help before the Christmas period, as there is an enormous backlog of visa applicants to get through before it makes any difference.

Restaurateur Neil Perry told The Oz he was struggling to staff his two new venues in Sydney’s east. He was hoping to open a third next year, but won’t unless something improves.

“You try and help to create jobs to help the economy, but you just can’t do it under these conditions,” he said. “It’s really, really tough.”
