It’s been a strange two years in the world of interior design as we began to figure our homes out differently. Work calls were taken from the couch, schoolwork spilled onto the dining table; and socialising often felt safer in a living room than in a crowded bar.

The shape of home, for many of us, changed and as we moved into a new year, it’s unsurprising that we felt the need for a refresh. Home renovations even reached record highs in 2021, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Here are interior designer approved ways to improve your home in 2022.

While design’s recent embrace of overt maximalism brightened our interior tastes, there’s always room for simplicity.  Sam Fazzari, founder of homewares boutique Mobilia, suggests more people are responding to stress by seeking out spaces with “a calming effect”.

Opt for simplicity

Creating calm in the home doesn’t mean sterility. Find a sense of groundedness with natural fibres and earthy pieces “that give a feeling of tranquillity”, suggests Fazzari. Think rippling, tactile walls, neutral colours and soft, undulating curves.

Play with nature

Instead of going straight for demolishing walls, turn your gaze to smaller changes — like art. Give the illusion of having changed so much in the house, while also making it feel like it’s been imbued with a new spirit.

Take an artful approach

Refreshing your home doesn’t have to be a wasteful process. Practice “conscious minimalism”, which forgoes trend-based pieces for more timeless style. Think of sourcing items for the home as a long term investment with meaning and sentimentality.

A durable home

If you’re the type for self-expression through colour, there’s never been a better time to refresh your home. Think monochrome patterns, primary colours clashing with pastels and a touch of fluorescence, spliced with wavy, structural lines.

Make a splash

The creation of space is not only about the visual experience of ‘looking beautiful’, but also the more tactile, atmospheric and emotional experiences that can be generated.
