Natural wine has been brimming to the surface of the alcohol game for years. Between the unique blends, modern winemaking practises, and eye-catching labels, it’s quickly become a staple in the amateur sommelier’s cupboard.

Where traditional wines can sometimes feel inaccessible, natural varieties are fun, vibrant and stupidly drinkable. Here’s what  you need to know about natural wine, as told by Joel Amos, founder of natural wine delivery service Drnks.

Broadly speaking, natural wine has none of the harmful additives used in modern winemaking, including pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals in the vineyard and the winery. Basically, 'natural' refers to the way a wine is produced and is still very much made with grapes like the wines you're used to.

How is natural wine different from regular wine?

Skin contact: A style of winemaking essentially making white wine like you make red wine. It spends time resting on the skins of the berries

What are some types of natural wine?

Low-intervention: Not necessarily natural, but does refer to minimal inputs by growers and makers in the winemaking process

Biodynamic: A strict ecological approach to farm management (like to organic farming)

People often think the wines are faulty or taste weird but these days that is very rarely the case. Natural wine has progressed a lot and most winemakers are making clean and pure wines, from beautiful and healthy farms.

What are some common misconceptions about natural wine?

The main one is not ingesting unknown additives that are used in most commercial wines. Secondly, alcohol levels tend to be lower—which doesn’t eradicate but does help with hangovers. Preservatives tend to occur at lower levels which is beneficial for people with allergies.

What are the benefits of natural wine?

Joel Amos,Founder of natural wine service Drnks

"Natural wine ticks a lot of boxes for conscious consumers, so more people would prefer to drink these wines over conventional wine."

All naturale.
