End of an era: What's next for Fifa?

This year's FIFA 23 video game will be the last EA Sports game to bear that title after an almost 30-year partnership.

The brand launched in 1993, with global gaming company EA releasing FIFA International Soccer for the Sega Megadrive and Sega Genesis consoles.

The first game featured 78 national teams, but no real player names, stadiums, official team logos or player likenesses. Players were named after people who worked on the game.

FIFA 95, the second game in the series released in 1994, introduced only minor upgrades and club teams within eight national leagues.

FIFA holds the Guinness World Record as the highest selling video game franchise, with more than 325 million copies of its games sold worldwide.

The split appears to have come because EA wanted more control over the FIFA licence to make things like NFTs, and FIFA wanted one billion US dollars.

The future for FIFA appears to be an unspecified number of non-simulation games releasing toward Christmas, starting with FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and then building to a new simulation game in 2023, supposedly named FIFA 24.
