Coral spawning a symbol of hope on Great Barrier Reef

Stunning footage has emerged of the Great Barrier Reef’s annual spawning event, which scientists are viewing as a symbol of hope for the fragile 2300km-long structure’s future.

Scientists spent hours in the ocean on November 23 and 24 filming the phenomenon, which occurs when corals release tiny balls containing sperm and eggs.

These rise to the surface and break open so cross fertilisation can occur.

Principal marine scientist from conservation organisation Reef Teach, Gareth Phillips, said the timing of the spawning reflected the nation’s upbeat mood as Covid restrictions eased across much of the country.

“We are coming out of restrictions with a fresh leap of life just as the reef is spawning. That positivity is what people are feeling. It’s the celebration of the year.”

Alya Woodley, a Marine Science student and Reef Tech intern, said as if on cue, the coral began releasing spawn, like clouds of pink, a beautiful event to witness.

Mr Phillips, a veteran of 10 spawnings, said this year’s occurrence was an indication of the reef’s resilience, despite several coral bleaching events caused by warm sea temperatures.

Mr Phillips said it was gratifying to see the reef give birth, as it was a strong demonstration that its ecological functions were intact after being in a recovery phase for more than 18 months.

“The reef has gone through its own troubles like we all have, but it can still respond – and that gives us hope. I think we must all focus on the victories as we emerge from the pandemic.”

Mr Phillips was part of a team of six scuba divers monitoring a section on the outer edge of Flynn Reef, about 60km east of Cairns, as part of the Coral Index Project.

Working off tour operator Passions of Paradise’s catamaran, the team has counted coral species and filmed the spawning for the Eye on the Reef data-gathering program.
