Furiosa is coming

Production of George Miller’s film Mad Max: Furiosa, tipped to be the largest production ever shot in NSW, is in full swing in the town of Broken Hill.

With the film's biggest stars Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy  in town, The Daily Telegraph headed out to see how the movie was shaping up.

Furiosa is the fifth instalment in the Mad Max franchise.  It was announced by producer Doug Mitchell, Chris Hemsworth, and director George Miller in 2021.

Broken Hill is already feeling the benefit of the film's 800-strong production crew. Hotels, AirBnBs even caravans are booked out by the project, set to pour $350 million into the state’s economy.

Economic win

Huge marquees and trailers have been set up on the Mundi Mundi Plains, half an hour out of Broken Hill. Four decades ago, Mad Max 2 was shot in the area just outside Silverton.

A prequel to the 2015 hit Fury Road, the plot to Furiosa, co-written by Miller and Nick Lathouris, remains largely under wraps. Most of the Fury Road crew is returning to the shoot.

Anya Taylor-Joy has taken over the role of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Playing a younger version of the character, Mad Max: Furiosa has been described as a stand-alone story exploring Furiosa's origins.

Stars arrive

"The one thing I can say about it, Fury Road... within the film, happened over three days and two nights. This is a saga, that happens over many years," Miller said of the new film.

Chris Hemsworth is rumoured to be playing the lead villain in the film. He's been spotted at cafes and pubs across town, as have other cast members including English actor Tom Burke, and Aussies Angus Sampson and Lochy Hulme.

The long-in-development film is  slated for release on May 24, 2024.
