Liz Mills is the only woman in the world to coach a men’s senior basketball team at a competitive level, and the first to lead the national team to a major continental tournament.

The 35-year-old, who hails from Sydney, is currently the head coach of the Kenya national basketball team.

Liz joined the Kenyan Morans in January and steered the team to their first AfroBasket championship in 28 years.

Liz discovered her passion for the sport during the ‘90s, while looking up to the sporting greats and high-profile female coaches in the Women’s National Basketball League.

She found herself coaching in Kenya after doing a volunteer program in Zambia with her twin sister and being invited to watch a pre-season tournament for the men’s Super League in 2011.

Liz’s secret to coaching success was knowing who her players were as people, both on and off the court.

Her next big dream? Liz is shooting to be the first woman to lead an African team at the World Cup or the Olympics.
