Princess Elizabeth fell in love with Philip Mountbatten when she was just 13 years old.

The son of Greek and Danish royalty, he was first introduced to the Princess in 1934, and although the pair began writing after a second meeting in 1939, it would be seven years before King George VI gave permission for them to wed.

The Princess was always determined to marry for love, and her wedding on November 20, 1947 was the consummate ode to this.

Despite the romance and extravagance of the event, the Princess’s Sir Norman Hartnell gown was paid for with rationing coupons.

It had a simple fitted bodice with a heart-shaped neckline and was draped in ivory silk with pearl and crystal embroidery, which enhanced the crown jewels she wore.

The Princess’s wedding gown had a five-metre silk tulle train carried by her pageboys, Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent.

The wedding ceremony featured 91 singers in an abbey choir joined by both the Chapel Royal and St George's Chapel in Windsor.

After their wedding at Westminster Abbey, the couple took a carriage procession through London in the Irish Stage Coach.

Princess Elizabeth had eight bridesmaids, including her sister HRH Princess Margaret. The Duke of Edinburgh’s cousin David Mountbatten, Marquess of Milford Haven, served as best man.

The newlyweds enjoyed breakfast inside Buckingham Palace’s Ball Supper Room. They had a two-metre, four-tiered wedding cake baked by McVitie and Price.

King George's wedding gift to his daughter was a diamond necklace. The couple received more than 2500 gifts from around the world, including a bookcase, sewing machine and even a fridge.

A wedding fit for a Queen.
