Across New York, London, Milan and Paris, designers have relished in the return of in-person presentations. After seasons of digital showcases, industry creatives have found themselves in the grip of an experimental fervour, which manifested itself not only in clothing, but in methods of wearing and display.

Here, Vogue curates the 8 styling tips that’ll leave their mark on the season.

The sun was the guiding star for designers this season, as runways were flooded with the colours of dawn and dusk. Proenza Schouler brought the Kauai sun to New York’s Little Island, while Christian Dior, Collina Strada and Chloé embraced joyous vermillion.

Citrus colours

The sexy was new in a literal sense across the spring/summer ’22 runways, with fresh faces at their forefront. This young vanguard of designers—Supriya Lele, Nensi Dojaka, Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Coperni—envisioned bold, daring women, most comfortable in a barely there top or low-slung trousers.

The new sexy

Being cooped up at home does little wonders for the soul, so with the lifting of quarantine, designers sent the soul wandering. Gabriela Hearst delivered a sustainable and colourful Chloé—jackets were fringed and gowns hand-spun, ponchos and tactile purses.

Craftwork

Suits have been a fashion week staple for seasons now, but spring/summer ’22 saw designers dial up the colour—and the sex appeal. Luke and Lucie Meier’s showcase in Paris was defined by elegant, abstract tailoring—jackets in sherbet yellows without lapels or buttons, to let the silhouette shine.

Saturated suits

Up-and-down, side-to-side—designers read between the lines for spring/summer ’22. Robert Cavalli and Missoni took a trip to the wild side, tiger and zebra stripes adorning oversized blazers and dresses that clung to the body.

Stripes

Hemlines were raised this season, an invitation from designers to stretch out our limbs and step into a new world. While the aughts reigned on its Milanese runway, Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior cast her gaze to the swinging sixties, mini skirts and jackets rendered in clean lines and graphic colour.

Mini skirts

Athleisure took a more pronounced turn in New York, London, Milan and Paris, leaning more on the “athletic” aspect of the portmanteau. Interpretations of the sporty ranged from the coast to the courtside.

Sporty chic

Fashion illuminated the runways on the runways at spring/summer ’22 as designers dabbled in sequins large and small. What better way to enter the party season than in full radiance?

Sequins and shine

The sartorial forecast? Sunny days ahead.
