It may be because it is the film industry’s highest honour, but there's also the added intrigue of beaming into Hollywood's elite each year to see the surprising moments unique to live television.

People tune into the Oscars for many reasons.

As history has made clear, the awards show has provided a wealth of them—from the history-making wins to the snubs and awkward moments, on-stage mishaps and even a streaker.

Here are 5 of the most controversial Oscars moments in history.

Alfred Hitchcock was rumoured to be so peeved that he was nominated for five Oscars and never won, that when he was given the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, his speech consisted of just two words:

Alfred Hitchcock gives world’s briefest speech

“Thank you.”

When Brando won best actor for his role as Vito Corleone in The Godfather, he sent Apache Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather to attend the ceremony and reject the award on his behalf.

As Elizabeth Taylor was welcomed to present Best Picture by host David Niven, a streaker ran out instead. Some have suspected the incident was set up, but given the culprit—activist Robert Opel—passed in 1979, we may never know.

The Oscars got its very own streaker

While accepting the Best Actor award, Adrian Brody shocked audiences when he unexpectedly kissed presenter Halle Berry. The incident eventually led to negative headlines years later for its non-consensual nature.

It was the stuff of nightmares: the moment when you realise you’ve made a gargantuan mistake on live television and crush the dreams of dozens in the process—this is exactly what happened when time came to announce the winner of the event’s top prize.

The infamous La La Land/Moonlight mix up

Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as 2017’s victor. A whole two-and-a-half minutes later, during a thank you speech, the show’s producers began scrambling about on stage before it was revealed that La La Land hadn’t in fact won but Moonlight had.

Never a dull moment.
