It’s safe to say the bond on this one will be hefty.

The fictional family home of the Tenenbaums from Wes Anderson’s indie classic, The Royal Tenenbaums, is up for rent in New York City. Located in the Hamilton Heights neighbourhood of West Harlem, the townhouse is large for NYC.

The house was famously home to the talented bunch of oddballs which comprised the Tenenbaum family in Anderson’s third film starring Ben Stiller, Gwneyth Paltrow, Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston and Luke Wilson.

In reality, it was built in 1899 in the Flemish Revival style, featuring turrets and over 50 windows. It’s that sort of over-the-top iconoclastic style that drew Wes Anderson to it in the first place.

Anderson told the Observer in 2001 he was looking for a house that “wasn‘t stereotypical” and “has a storybook quality to it”. Typical to Anderson’s famed attention to detail, the Hamilton Heights mansion definitely fits the bill.

Adding to the 6,000 square feet of extravagance, the mansion features six bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, two kitchens and an elevator.

Heartbreakingly, for anyone watching house prices soar, the mansion was bought in 1999 for just US$460,000 by the longtime owners who have put it on the market for rent. Take a deep dive through the house’s glorious interiors below.
