Tented camp in Costa Rica’s Arenal volcano region is a perfect pitch
One of the first luxury camps to be set up in Central America has opened in Costa Rica.
One of the first luxury camps to be established in Central America has opened in the Arenal Volcano National Park in Costa Rica, a stunning region known for its hot springs, sloths and abundant birdlife.
Inspired by similar camps in Africa and Asia, Nayara Tented Camp features 18 large, airconditioned tented suites tucked into the rainforest with unobstructed views of the volcano, each with a private deck with plunge pool fed by natural mineral springs.
The camp represents phase three for Nayara, a property that also includes two award-winning resorts, Nayara Springs (adults only) and the family-friendly Nayara Gardens. All three are connected by footbridges.
Great care has been taken to tuck the camp inconspicuously into the jungle with some 8000m of tent canvas custom-dyed. For family groups there are pairs of tents connected via covered walkways. The precinct also includes interconnecting hot springs, a large swimming pool, swim-up bar and new restaurant.
Management is continuing to expand an onsite sloth sanctuary by planting hundreds more cecropia trees, the creature’s main food source. Resident nature guide and “sloth concierge’’ Juan Pablo leads tours of the sanctuary, and for active types the Arenal Conservation Area is an eco-adventure hotspot for whitewater rafting, canyoning and volcano hikes.
The camp provides easy access to the restaurants of sister Nayara resorts, including the Mi Cafecito espresso bar serving a rich local brew where guests are welcome to create their own custom blend to take home.
Rooms from $US1200 ($1743) a night.
