Melbourne’s best rooftop bars
There’s no better way to enjoy the iconic skyline of Melbourne than from one of its countless rooftop bars. Here are 11 of the best.
There’s a lot to love about Melbourne; the shopping, the food, the AFL — it’s arguably Australia’s cultural capital. Its extensive collection of rooftop bars, however, cements the city as a bonafide hospitality capital.
With plenty of tall buildings emerging from the ground around Port Phillip, several have popped neat bars on top to soak up the views. As one of the flattest metropolitan capitals in Australia, you don’t need to go very high for a great vantage point, and many of these rooftop bars are only a few levels up.
With hotels, pubs, and bars all competing for the highest vantage points in the city, there’s something about drinking on a roof that is so enjoyable. The best place to enjoy a drink is with a view, and the best view is from the roof, whether it’s while soaking up the summer sunshine or huddling beside outdoor heaters in winter with a belly-warming beverage in hand.
Space in Melbourne, as it is about the same for almost everywhere in Australia, is becoming increasingly difficult to find, which explains the growing popularity of the rooftop bar. Here is our pick of Melbourne’s best.
Her
One of the newest additions to Melbourne’s burgeoning rooftop bar scene is Her. Helmed by the Arbory Crew, the team behind Arbory Bar & Eatery and its riverside sister spot, Arbory Afloat, Her is a towering sanctuary in the heart of the CBD. A spot where you can easily find yourself all day from morning until evening, there’s an all-day French eatery, as well as a Thai-style barbecue canteen, vinyl-ready music space and of course, its scenic rooftop bar. Located inside the original facade of a heritage-listed building, Her was given a new life by architects JCB and designers Tamsin Johnson. Sip cocktails and listen to the best music to your heart’s content.
Location: 270 Lonsdale St, Melbourne VIC 3000

Perched on the 14th floor rooftop of the Greek Community Building on Lonsdale Street, Fable is the highest rooftop bar in the city, offering panoramic skyline views plus a list of inventive cocktails. The drinks and food menu are both Mediterranean-themed, and beyond the pages of martini variations, most of the drinks are gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
