2022 marks an exciting development for QT Hotels & Resorts, with the boutique hotel group slated to open its very first regional hotel, QT Newcastle, in April next year. The much-anticipated addition to the QT repertoire will be one of the shining jewels of the city’s newly revitalised East End (the latest project from the developers at Iris Capital), and tucked away in the 113-year-old David Jones building located on Hunter Mall.

All those involved have been intent on celebrating heritage first and foremost in the construction of QT Newcastle, a tribute not only to the history of the building the hotel is located in, but the natural surroundings and coastline of Newcastle itself. Though the interior is certainly sleek and contemporary, guests of the QT Newcastle will have no choice but to admire the rich land around them, with floor-to-ceiling windows in every room offering panoramic views of the Harbour, the city’s Christ Church Cathedral, and far beyond the sands to the Pacific Ocean.

Echoes of the Newcastle flora and fauna also abound within. Nic Graham, interior designer and longstanding collaborator with QT, joined forces with the design team at Event Hospitality & Entertainment to curate the hotel. Each room draws inspiration from the natural elements of earth, water and light, observed in the choice of colour palette, texture and stone.

“We have reinvigorated an iconic heritage building, respecting and maintaining the raw shell and layering contemporary life within,” says Graham of his newest project. “It’s a nice reminder of the human spirit, that we all come from something. We have created a cocooning interior through colour blocking and juxtaposing textures, which evoke the history of Newcastle.”

With 104 guest rooms and suites, a series of public and private function spaces, as well as a dining concept and rooftop bar, the QT Newcastle is sure to establish itself as a staple for the beachside precinct, attracting visitors from far and wide to all the region has to offer.

“We look forward to being a part of Newcastle’s resurgence, and welcoming the community as a part of ours,” says Callum Kennedy, QT Hotels & Resorts’ group general manager. “QT Newcastle will live and breathe with the same energy and vibrancy guests love from the world of QT.”

“The hotel will be championed by QT’s luxurious quirk from design to signature service. It will be unlike anything the local hotel market has seen before.”

QT Newcastle is part of the first chapter of Iris Capital’s $700 million development in the East End, which spans four city blocks and will include three other residential buildings. The progress joins other growth in areas of Newcastle, including the freshly built Museum Place Civic Link in the city centre, as well as developments in Newcastle’s Foreshore Precinct and West End.

QT Newcastle is accepting bookings from December 17. For more information, or to make a booking of your own when QT Newcastle opens in April 2022, visit qtnewcastle.com.
