Bonifacio’s medieval citadel has a dramatic setting, perched atop 70m-high limestone cliffs on the southern tip of the island of Corsica.

The Haute Ville, or Upper City, was founded in the 9th century, and after exploring its narrow streets visitors can take a path along the clifftops to King Aragon’s Stairway, historic steps that lead down to the sea.

Almost 130km to the north is the Corsican capital of Ajaccio, where Napoleon Bonaparte was born on this day in 1769.
