Gordon Ramsay’s Uncharted debuts with a Tasmanian feast
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay gives viewers a taste of Tasmania.
Mainlanders will have to wait until July 24 before they can return to the little Aussie island state that has been punching above its weight in all things tourism.
That date is when, assuming the situation north across Bass Strait doesn’t escalate further, border restrictions are scheduled to lift in Tasmania. Tassie welcomes more than 1.2 million visitors a year and Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay recently joined their ranks. Season two of his TV show, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, debuts on National Geographic channel on Tuesday with the loud-mouthed Scot venturing to the Apple Isle. On a picturesque beach on Forestier Peninsula, he meets New Zealand-born chef Analiese Gregory, previously of Hobart’s Franklin restaurant fame, and the pair decide to duel it out over a pile of local produce and a hot griddle.
Following a welcome to country ceremony, Ramsay embarks on a gathering mission, catching crayfish and trout, trying wallaby and other native ingredients with outdoor culinary queen Sarah Glover, harvesting honey and sampling some sheep poo-smoked rye whisky.
Viewers may at times wonder if they’ve accidentally flicked over to Nat Geo Wild; Ramsay lays it on a tad thick with ominous music and references to Tasmania’s deadly great white sharks, tiger snakes and, err, bees. But anyone hankering for a taste of Tassie will find it a satisfying entree while they await the main course.
