Flight review: Sydney to Tokyo on Japan Airlines

There’s plenty to like about this Japan Airlines premium economy service.

All about the seat Five rows are configured 2-3-2 and JAL claims these premium economy seats offer 10cm more depth than those on other carriers. There’s a large tray table, 110V AC power supply, and USB port, plus flexible reading light and a privacy shield beside the headrest.

And so to dine JAL has the most extensive pre-order menu for premium economy I’ve encountered and dishes are above average in taste and presentation. There’s also an Udon de Sky noodles option throughout the flight.

That’s entertainment New movie releases are mixed with old favourites; the extensive TV library features US dramas and sitcoms plus documentaries about Japan.

Brickbats The toilets are shared with economy class at the rear. Unless in exit row 17, if seats in front are reclined on this daytime flight, it can be difficult to get in and out of window and middle positions without disturbing neighbours. I ask to have a suit bag hung and am told this service is available only for business class passengers but the flight attendant relents with no fuss.

Bouquets Use of Qantas business lounge at Sydney airport and express immigration pass. In-flight amenities bag contains dental kit and earplugs. Service is exceptional. It’s been a pleasure and I’ve already booked another JAL flight.
