Who needs Portofino when you can have Opatija in Croatia?

Interest in the picturesque town on the Istrian peninsula has soared since Foxtel began streaming 1920s period drama Hotel Portofino. The series follows the travails of a British family and their luxury establishment as fascism is on the rise.

Set in the hugely popular Italian holiday hub, it was actually filmed on the Adriatic coast in a location known for its medieval walls, cobbled streets and the opulent villas of 19th-century Austrian and Hungarian nobility.

With Croatia’s tourism star already on the rise, this kind of exposure looks set to draw even more travellers to its shores.
