Some of the most spectacular autumn colours can be found in North America from next month.

Here, in the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, the forested hills that roll down to the Connecticut River are cloaked in yellow, red and auburn.

Foliage fans who drive around photographing the trees at this time of year are known as leaf-peepers, and there are entire websites devoted to tracking the hues as they emerge across the US and Canada.
