Aurora Wilderness Camp, Finland: Northern Lights a moveable feast
It’s possible to experience all the razzle-dazzle of the Northern Lights while still snug in bed.
Viewing the Northern Lights from bed seems something only Bear Grylls would contemplate, probably using nothing more than a ground sheet and some thermal underwear.
But what about a little hotel room on skis with a transparent roof for optimum night sky viewing, manoeuvred into the best possie in the northern Finland tundra?
The Aurora Wilderness Camp consists of three new mobile rooms camped about 6km east of Kilpisjarvi, deep in the Arctic Circle, an area recording more Northern Lights activity than any other place in Finland.
Each room measures 2.5m wide, 4.5m long and 2m tall, and is fitted with an extra-wide bed, table, dry toilet, heater and gas stove. Britain-based Off the Map Travel package offers one night at the camp with additional chalet digs nearby.
The experience begins at 6pm, when a guide transports guests by snowmobile to the camp. A fire is lit, dinner prepared, then guests left to their own devices to explore; hot snacks and breakfast are also in the offing.
Off the Map Travel tailors tours to the region but typically a three-night, four-day experience (with one night at the camp) is priced from £1599 ($2935) a person, twin-share for full board and private transfers from Tromso airport. The rooms on skis are available to book until the middle of April. The season starts again in January next year.
