Melbourne, city of laneways, serious coffee and atmospheric restaurants, makes for an ideal couple’s getaway. And it doesn’t matter if food or football is your love language or indeed if you prefer old-world charm to cutting-edge design, Melbourne has a romantic hotel to suit any kind of rendezvous.

Below find five hotels to book should you be feeling romantically inclined.

Established in 1883, the Hotel Windsor on Spring Street can count the likes of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck among those to have stayed in its grand accommodations. The appeal of the Windsor, with its plush old-world decor and charm, is undeniable. Book the Grand Romance Package, which includes accommodation in a superior or deluxe room (or upgrade to one of the Victorian suites), a bottle of champagne on arrival, breakfast for two and a 1pm checkout.

Adelphi Hotel

Adelphi Hotel was Australia’s first boutique design property when it opened in 1993, and it’s lost none of its cool factor. It’s in prime date-night position on Flinders Lane, opposite the hip and happening Supernormal restaurant and just up the road from popular Japanese eatery Kisume. Stop by the hotel’s famous dessert restaurant, Om Nom, to finish the evening on a sweet note. And don’t forget to schedule time to float in the famous glass-bottomed rooftop pool.

United Places Botanic Gardens

Couples seeking quality time together surrounded by chic interiors will find it at the boutique United Places hotel. Tucked beside the Royal Botanic Gardens, the 12-suite hotel gets its good looks from Carr Design, the same firm behind Mornington Peninsula’s Jackalope Hotel. Doing away with traditional notions of a hotel, there isn’t a lobby or front desk, but instead a 24/7 butler to cater to guests’ whims. Attention to detail is impressive, from Le Labo amenities to the thoughtful interiors and breakfast is delivered to your door.

The Langham

Perhaps it’s The Langham’s signature pink hue, the sparkling chandeliers or the grand staircase, but there’s romance in the air at this establishment. Situated on Southbank, a skip from the city, make the most of the excellent concierge service to obtain dinner reservations wherever you fancy. Be sure to enjoy the traditional afternoon tea, and perhaps pick up a cute Langham bear from the gift shop as a souvenir.

With guestrooms categorised as WOW, Extreme WOW and Fabulous, a stay here is a sure way to impress someone special. Accommodation features floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the skyline. The fit-out and artwork references the city, the cocktails at the hotel’s Curious bar are great and the pool, under an undulating and gleaming ceiling, is a work of art.
