8 of the best road trips under 3 hours from Sydney

Sydney is surrounded by a slew of destinations worthy of a short road trip. From the Blue Mountains to Palm Beach, there is no shortage of land to explore.

While Sydney has countless drawcards, escaping the city many of us have been confined to, on and off, during the global pandemic has never been more appealing. Thankfully, NSW has plenty of scenic destinations ideal for a much-needed break.

The following locations deliver all you could ask for, offering everything from beautiful beaches and adventure-inspiring activities, to scenic views and acclaimed restaurants. And they are all within three hours’ drive of the CBD.

Sydney to Port Stephens

Just 2 ½ hours outside Sydney, Port Stephens is far enough away to feel like an escape, but close enough for a day trip if you’re short on time. If a weekend getaway is in order, a stay at Bannisters Port Stephens is recommended. While you’re there, try your hand at sandboarding t the famous Stockton Sand Dunes, the largest moving dunes in the southern hemisphere. Kayaking, 4WD tours, sailing cruises, whale watching, rock climbing and snorkelling with dolphins are also on offer.

Sydney to Kiama

This beautiful seaside town on the south coast is just a two-hour drive from the city. Kiama is best known for its giant blowhole, touted as the largest in the world. The landmark puts on a dramatic show, especially when the swell is running from the southeast, and is a popular drawcard for tourists and locals alike. Embark on the 22km Kiama Coast Walk, take a dip in the Kiama Beach ocean pool, visit the local farmers market or stop off at one of more than 30 cafes and coffee shops in the area — there’s something for everyone.

Sydney to Berry

A quaint country town two hours from Sydney, Berry is a popular destination for those eager to browse boutiques, shop for antiques and collectables, and dabble in arts and crafts. For spectacular views en route, take the Grand Pacific Drive, which includes the 665m-long Sea Cliff Bridge running parallel to the rocky shore. Visit the Berry Donut Van, Silos Estate, Two Figs Winery, The Treat Factory, Milkwood Bakery or Queen St Eatery for good food, local wine and delectable desserts.

Sydney to Hunter Valley

One of the best ways to explore the Hunter Valley, two hours’ drive from Sydney, is by bike. Hire a cycle and cruise from cellar doors to distilleries, tasting wines and spirits and grazing on decadent cheese boards. For dedicated foodies, the region boasts numerous hatted restaurants — think Muse Kitchen, Bistro Molines and Margan. Not keen on pedal power? Book a tour by horseback, rent a classic car or hop aboard a hot-air balloon. If wine isn’t your thing, there’s camping and hiking in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Yengo National Park or check out the pretty Hunter Valley Gardens in Pokolbin.

Sydney to Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains, just 1½ hours from Sydney, are a hotspot for hikers, canyoners, photographers, nature-lovers and anyone who can’t resist a beautiful view. Apart from the much-loved Echo Point, there are multiple picturesque spots to soak up the scenery: Govetts Leap, Sublime Point and Wentworth Falls, for starters. Take a stroll along the gentle Three Sisters walk, browse the boutiques of Leura, visit Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah, explore the Jenolan Caves, ride the heart-stopping Scenic Railway and discover Lithgow’s Glow Worm Tunnel. Looking to stay a little longer? Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort in Katoomba is highly recommended, or travel further afield to the luxurious private villas at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley.

Sydney to Palm Beach

Located in the Northern Beaches district, an hour from the CBD, ritzy Palm Beach is renowned for its eye-watering real estate as well as its clear blue waters and golden shores. Step aboard a boat charter, walk up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse, take a kayaking tour of Pittwater, tee up at Palm Beach Golf Course, or dine on the waterfront deck at The Boathouse. Fans of Home and Away won’t want to miss the official tour that takes in numerous locations where the series was filmed.

Sydney to Terrigal

At the southern end of the central coast, Terrigal is an ideal seaside escape just 1½ hours from Sydney. It offers scenic walking and cycling trails, the opportunity to spot humpback whales during their migration, and the chance to dine at a slew of celebrated eateries overlooking the beachfront esplanade. Wannabe surfers can learn the ropes at the Central Coast Surf School or Central Coast Surf Academy, while scuba divers can explore the wreck of the Ex-HMAS Adelaide, off the coast at a depth of 32m.

Sydney to Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley is a bush-cloaked gem between Jervis Bay and the Southern Highlands, just over two hours’ drive from Sydney. The destination offers boutique wineries, adventures on the Kangaroo River, cooking workshops at Flavours of the Valley, and waterside picnics at Tallowa Dam. To delve deeper into the valley’s colonial history, head to the Pioneer Village Museum or stop by the heritage-listed Friendly Inn for a hearty meal.
