In a room of Australian A-listers, the actress quipped she better give everyone a few more life updates to get the jump on the paper who 'intruded' her privacy to out her relationship.

In a Hordern Pavilion draped in red velvet, actress Rebel Wilson took a swipe at the Sydney Morning Herald in a room full of Australian A-listers.

At the AACTA Awards, Wilson told the crowd "there have been big things that have happened in my life this year, like big changes."

"I switched from dairy to soy. I thought I should tell you guys now and get the jump on the Sydney Morning Herald."

The comment is in reference to a June column, penned by Andrew Horney, in which the author bemoaned the Australian actress "gazumped" his story by outing her relationship with Romona Agruma on Instagram after he put questions to her, and before he went to print.

Wilson told The Oz the behaviour was "grubby" and the Australian Press Council found the article “intruded” on her privacy, and lacked “sufficient public interest to justify such an intrusion”.

For the rest of the night, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis reigned triumphant, taking home four awards including Best Film, Best Direction in Film, Best Lead Actor (Austin Butler), and Best Supporting Actress (Olivia DeJonge.) “All of this held this movie in our hands like a precious child through Covid with one goal, to bring audiences back into the cinema,” Luhrmann said. In accepting the award for Best Lead Actor, Austin Butler sang the praises of co-star DeJonge. “Olivia. You are brilliant. You are a once-in-a-generation talent.”

Elvis costume designer Catherine Martin was honoured with the evening's most prestigious award, the Longford Lyell Award, celebrating her global contribution and influence to film. “We must remain vigilant. We must never stop advocating for art,” said Martin.

Mystery Road: Origin took home three AACTA Awards. It won Best Drama Series “Australian stories are really important, they define us as a nation, they change lives,” said Greer Simpkin when accepting the award. Mark Coles Smith took home Best Lead Actor in a Drama “I am really excited by the content we are making in this country,” Smith said. And Tuuli Narkle, who couldn’t attend the ceremony because she has Covid, took out Best Lead Actress in a Drama.

Netflix’s runaway global hit Heartbreak High also swept up, which rocked because every time it won the cast and crew hollered as if their lives depended on it. These kids are having so much fun. Thomas Weatherall won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, Rita Carmody for Best Costume Design in Television, and Hannah Carrol Chapman won Best Screenplay. “You shaved your heads and grew your hair into Eshay mullets. As a writer, you can’t ask for anything more.” Heartbreak High also won every public-voted Audience Choice Award it was nominated for: Best TV Show, Best Actor (Bryn Chapman) and Best Actress (Chloe Hayden).

Chris Hemsworth was honoured with the Trailblazer Award, presented by Russell Crowe, which celebrates the achievements of an Australian screen practitioner who inspires others in the industry. “My parents instilled in me a belief that anything was possible. When I said I wanted to be an actor, they said, ‘absolutely, the couch is always here if you need it,” he said. “I wanted to thank Russell Crowe, because all of his films inspired me when I was a young actor,” Hemsworth said. The actor went on to admit that he emulated Crowe’s vocal affectations when developing his performance as Thor. “I found Russell Crowe on the set [of Thor: Love and Thunder] and he’s there playing Zeus, and I’m there playing Russell Crowe.”

“If you’re gonna steal, steal from the best of em’,” Hemsworth said.

Actor Chris Hemsworth has taken out the AACTA Trailblazer Award, an honour that celebrates the achievements of an Australian screen practitioner “who inspires others in this industry.”

Hemsworth’s career and contributions will be honoured at the AACTA Awards ceremony, taking place in Sydney this evening, where he will accept the award from AACTA president, Russell Crowe.

“It’s a huge honour to accept the AACTA Trailblazer Award tonight from someone I have always looked up to and who also has paved the way for so many of us overseas,” Hemsworth said in a statement. “The career I have enjoyed up until now has been so rewarding and I don’t take for granted the start the Australian screen industry gave me.”

Hemsworth, who recently announced he will be taking a break from acting after learning of his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease, added “I’ll do whatever I can to champion our incredible crews and creatives to the rest of the world and encourage big productions to head down under.”

The AACTA Awards will be broadcast on Channel 10 at 7:30pm tonight.

Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, which was filmed in Queensland, leads the nominees. The biopic picked up 16 nominations including Best Film, Best Direction in Film, Best Lead Actor in Film (Austin Butler), and Best Supporting Actress in Film (Olivia DeJonge).

Mystery Road: Origin followed closely behind with 15 nominations. Leah Purcell's The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson and George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing, which earned 14 and 13 nods, respectively.
