Harry Styles is in a queer love triangle

He's breaking Princess Diana's heart.

Harry Styles stars as a closeted cop torn between his wife and lover.

Now that the dust has settled from the Don’t Worry Darling  Venice premiere, let us divert our attention to Harry Styles’ next cinema exploit: My Policeman.

The first trailer for the forthcoming Michael Grandage (Genius) film has arrived, and we’re lapping it up. There’s a Cat Power score (‘Sea of Love’, of course), longing stares, tender embraces, and a troupe of Britain’s most beloved actors.

The film hinges on a queer love triangle. Harry plays Tom, a closeted police officer in 1957 Brighton, U.K, who marries Marion (played by The Crown’s Emma Corrin), and is having a (gasp!) secret affair with art curator Patrick (David Dawson.) The trailer leaps between the 1950s and 1990s, with the trio in their autumn years played by Linus Roache, Gina McKee and Rupert Everett.

Directed and executive produced by acclaimed theatre director Grandage, with a script penned by Ron Nyswaner based on Bethan Roberts’ 2012 romance novel of the same name. Watch the trailer below.

We love when Harry talks cinema, what with his recent “my favourite thing about the movie is, like, it feels like a movie,” musings on Don’t Worry Darling.

So what does he have to say about My Policeman?  Foremost, he wants us to know it’s not  “a gay story about guys being gay” but a film “about love and wasted time.” Not quite sure what the distinction is there.

Harry described the film's sex scenes — inspired by Hiroshima Mon Amour — as “tender.”

“So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it,” he told Rolling Stone.

“There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [Michael] wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.”

My Policeman will premiere in theatres on October 21 before landing on Amazon Prime Video on November 4.
