No one ever really gets the Met Gala themes, do they?

Karlie Kloss certainly didn't do the recommended reading for the 2019 Camp-themed Met Gala - Susan Sontag's seminal 1964 essay "Notes on Camp". She wore an uncourageous honeycomb mini dress with puffy black sleeves.

But then again, no one did.

Ever heard of a white party, Dame Anna Wintour, or 'pimps and hoes'?

The difference between last year's theme "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" and this year's theme "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" beats me. But we wish all the brave men who attach diamantes to their tux lapels, the best of luck.

There are footnotes to help out this year's patrons, however. "Gilded Glamour" (a period of New York opulence between 1870 and 1890) and "white tie", the invitation allegedly reads.

The 2022 Met Gala will be held on Monday May 2 at 6pm. That's Tuesday May 3 at 8am on Australia's east coast. Vogue will livestream the event across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

Met Gala is short for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala and celebrates the annual fashion exhibit at the Museum. The event is held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Often it's not so much about which celebrities attend, but which don't.

Last year, Nicki Minaj missed the Met because she wouldn't get the vaccine (after the now debunked claim that her cousin's "testicles became swollen" after getting his). It has also been reported our queen Zendaya will not be in attendance for the second year.

Unsettling Met Gala Looks

A$AP Rocky was awoken mid-nap for the 2021 Met Gala. He wore a quilt as a cape, designed by ERL’s Eli Russell Linnetz and inspired by a quilt he found in a California thrift store. Jury's still out on whether he'll be attending next weeks event, he was last week charged by police over an alleged shooting.

Whether or not we can expect the VERY PREGNANT reigning queen of the Met, Rihanna, to be in attendance is uncertain.

The Met's 2013 event, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, examined punk's impact on high fashion from the early 70s to now. Kim Kardashian's floor-length, floral, nod to Mrs Doubtfire is a far cry from the spitting, sexy, subversive punk of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McClaren's SEX boutique.

The 2009 Met Gala, The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion, focused on models of the 20th century and the way they inspired the fashion of their respective era. Jessica Alba would go on to inspire hoards of Year 10 formal dresses.

The 2003 Met Gala, Goddess: The Classical Mode, saw attendees don outfits inspired by the influence of ancient Greco-Roman dress. Think elegant, romantic, Venus Aphrodite.

Best Met Gala Looks

All hail Rihanna. She nailed the 2018 theme, 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imaginations' with her bedazzled Pope cosplay. Rihanna wore a pearl and jewel-encrusted rope, corresponding papal mitre and necklace, Christian Louboutin heels, and Cartier jewels. The entire look was designed by Margiela.
