Charli XCX and Tiësto are too sexy for us
Everything we're listening to this new music Friday.
Everything we're listening to this new music Friday.
Good afternoon sweet angels, it’s another edition of New Music Friday.
Last month I posed a question (/plea) asking for naming suggestions for this here weekly music wrap-up. 'New Music Friday' wasn't cutting the mustard, because I, like all good women, was almost always late to the party.
You steadfastly obliged. A faithful reader named Sam phoned in with a selection of sterling options. I'm yet to commit to a total rebrand, but it would be amiss to not acknowledge the early affinity I have towards "The Margaret Thatcher Memorial Weekly Playlist."
'Margaret on the Guillotine' anyone? Thoughts? Feelings? Suggestions? Let me know: 💌 geordie.gray@theoz.com.au
Anyway, let's get this show on the road. Here's everything we've been listening to this week:
Daine, ‘Sleepwalking’
Two of the most compelling forces in Australian music, Daine and Lonelyspeck, have reunited once more on ‘Sleepwalking’. A dreamy follow-up to Daine’s mixtape Quantum Jumping released back in April.
Charli XCX and Tiësto, ‘Hot In It’
Resident hot girl Charli XCX has teamed up with Dutch DJ Tiësto on a song that feels hell-bent on making us miserable. How are we to enjoy such a sexy, silly, carefree summer slapper in the midst of this unrelenting dampness, and with the threat of another La Niña spell just around the corner? Devastating.
DSMV, ‘Flash of Light’
Dance music with weight on its shoulders. DSM-V is the collaborative project between Marc Dwyer (Buzz Kull) and Morgan Wright (Burning Rose Records, Pelvis Records, Acopia). 'Flash of Light' is foggy and subliminal, driven by a relentlessly throbbing synth that feels slightly out of reach. Their debut album will arrive early 2023.
Sampa The Great, ‘Never Forget’
Melbourne-based Sampa the Great has linked up with fellow Zambian artists Chef 187, Tio Nason and Mwanjé on her new single ‘Never Forget’, off the forthcoming record, ‘As Above, So Below’, set to arrive in September. Sampa described the track as a “an ode to Zamrock music, a genre born in the ’70s combining traditional Zambian music and psychedelic rock."
SPEED, Gang Called Speed
It's a gang called SPEED baby! After reigniting the cities hardcore flame, Sydney's heavy-hitting heroes SPEED have finally unleashed their first official EP. It's every bit as ferocious and battering as you'd anticipate. Brava.
Alex G, Runner
Something uncanny lurks beneath the surface of ‘Runner’, an otherwise sunny and inviting song. Alex G lulls you into false comfort, then disarms you with a blood-curdling wail. The track arrives with the announcement of the Philadelphia artist’s new record, God Save The Animals, out September 23rd.
Mabel, ‘Let Love Go’
The Brit Award winner has collaborated with US rapper Little Tecca on the only song that makes a devastating voyage to a 6 am pilates class bearable. A little pep in the step for all the dead-tired, Lulu Lemon-clad girls out there.
