The way we buy art is changing. Today, we’re just as likely to direct message a favourite artist about purchasing directly as we are to walk into a physical gallery space and size up the selection on offer. But this doesn’t mean galleries have become obsolete. In fact, in the age of the Instagram artist, galleries can provide us with the advice we won’t find online, not to mention the confidence our purchase is legit. Now that’s priceless. 

But not all galleries are created equal. If you’ve spent time researching the commercial art market in Australia, you’ll know that when it comes to the cost of contemporary art, there is a sliding scale. However, many of Australia’s most exciting galleries pride themselves on selling affordable works, and a number of those galleries are set to exhibit at this weekend’s Affordable Art Fair Melbourne. 

Ahead of the fair’s opening at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, director Stephanie Kelly Gordine sat down with The Oz to share her picks of the art galleries you don’t need a six-figure salary to shop from.
