Tennis news: Serena Williams says she’s not retired, likely to return to court
Serena Williams has stunned the tennis world by declaring her career isn’t over less than two months after an emotional send-off at the US Open.
Less than two months after seemingly waving goodbye to professional tennis, Serena Williams has dropped a bombshell by declaring she has not retired.
The 41-year-old was given a stunning send-off at September’s US Open, where she lost to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.
But just when it appeared we had seen the last of the 23-time Grand Slam winner, Williams hinted her return to the court was only a matter of time.
“I am not retired,” Williams told a conference in San Francisco promoting her investment company, Serena Ventures.
Williams said the chances of a return to the court were “very high”.
“You can come to my house, I have a court,” she said.
Williams did not confirm the US Open would be her farewell event, remaining coy despite being given an emotional send-off by the American crowd.
“I still haven’t really thought about (retirement),” Williams reportedly said.
“But I did wake up the other day and go on the court and (considered) for the first time in my life that I’m not playing for a competition, and it felt really weird.
“It was like the first day of the rest of my life and I’m enjoying it, but I’m still trying to find that balance.”
