Nick Kyrgios withdraws from US Open due to injury

After making 2022 the most successful year of his career, Nick Kyrgios won’t end up making an appearance at any of 2023’s four grand slams after pulling out of the US Open with injury.

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the US Open, meaning he will miss all four grand slams this year after the most successful run of his career.

The Australian tennis star has only played one tournament in 2023 and his world ranking has plummeted to 92 amid several troublesome injuries.

He had been due to play at Wimbledon last month – a year after losing the final to Novak Djokovic – but withdrew on the eve of the tournament when scans revealed a torn ligament in his wrist.

Kyrgios had previously been battling a foot injury which kept him out of the French Open. He hurt himself during an incident where his car was stolen in Canberra, according to his agent.

US Open organisers confirmed on Friday that the Australian would not compete in New York when the tournament begins later this month.

The 28-year-old recently acknowledged that he would not stay on the tennis circuit into his 30s like Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

“No f***ing chance. No way. Bro, there’s no chance I’m playing until 33,” he said.

“Kyrgios playing until 33 is insane. I’m not playing until 33.

“Nah, I promise you, when I’m gone, you’ll never see me again.”

“The schedule is out of control. I’m getting old. I’m getting old … All the drinking and partying, I’m like 57.”

Last year, Kyrgios teamed up with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title.

Following his career-best showing at Wimbledon, he knocked off world number one Daniil Medvedev at the US Open before falling in the quarterfinals to Karen Khachanov.
