Bernard Tomic wins at Wimbledon, but rails against Dad's ban
BERNARD Tomic should have been celebrating a first round win at Wimbledon over a seeded opponent, but instead he railed against authorities.
BERNARD Tomic should have been celebrating an extraordinary first round Wimbledon victory against a seeded opponent, having overcome a dizziness that threatened to cut his match short, but he was forced instead to rail against an injustice he felt was personally directed.
Tomic desperately wants his father John to be courtside during this biggest of tennis tournaments, but the Wimbledon authorities have strictly enforced the 12 month ban recently imposed by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
Tomic cut a forlorn figure on Tuesday afternoon explaining how he physically felt "very bad" for not having had a big enough breakfast before his match held in the unusual midday London heat, prompting he to take a timely two minute delay in the fourth set of his first round match while he drank a sports drink and the doctor gave him an unidentified tablet.
Tomic's sudden break may have been regarded as gamesmanship by his opponent, the American Sam Querrey prompting Tomic to forcefully respond about "losing all my energy" but his immediate worry after the 7 6, 7 6, 3 6, 2 6, 6 3 result was not medical but parental.
Tomic, 20, wants his father in his coaches box and was upset about the ban, the processes of the investigation into his father, and how he could get his father to watch his match. He said he is even going to write to Wimbledon for special dispensation to allow his father to watch his matches.
Said Tomic, his forehead furrowing in concern: "I'm not going to lie and come here on a press conference and you know, before post-match we always get ATP people telling us what to say. I'm not going to hide and say that, you know I'm not going to say false things. I'm going to say the truth of how I feel. It's disappointing."
John Tomic was banned after allegedly headbutting Bernard Tomic's former hitting partner Thomas Drouet on the eve of the Madrid Masters. Drouet was left with a broken nose and slight neck injuries.
Bernard Tomic said the ATP imposed the Wimbledon ban a week ago after an ATP official spoke to his father "for 30 seconds on the phone"
Tomic continued that the investigators didn't ask Drouet for evidence: You don't do that. If you're the ATP, you come on a flight, you have a meeting with (people to ask) whatever's wrong.
"At this stage, they didn't. They investigated something on the telephone for 30 seconds and made a decision, which is very bad. "
Such was the concern by tennis authorities about keeping John Tomic outside of the sw19 courts, his picture was distributed to the G4s guards and special scrutineers were amidst the court three spectators to ensure he hadn't managed to sneak in via a spectator ticket.
The ATP confirmed that their investigaton into John Tomic had concluded last week. The ATP said his credential privileges remain suspended at all ATP tournaments from 12 month period from May 4, 2013 after which the suspension will be reviewed.
John Tomic is staying with Bernard in a house near to the Wimbledon courts and Bernard said: "He's very pleased that I won.
" But its very difficult to play a match, the biggest tournament we have in tennis, not to have your coach there or your father who has been there throughout your whole life, is very difficult. I'm going to stand by my decision, I think the ATP did the wrong thing. They have a lot of bad decisions, a few good ones, but I'm saying this is a very bad one.
When the questions returned to tennis, Tomic was asked about his next opponent, another American, James Blake. Tomic, still in his straight talking frame of mind inadvertently and distractedly gave his opponent some verbal ammunition: "He doesn't serve as good as Sam (Querrey). That's important on grass, you know, to return well. It's tough to play a guy that's serving well. So James, you know, is not serving as good as Sam, which it's a bit easier for me. I've got to step up and be aggressive off my game. I'm sure I can win this match, too."
