Australian Open fines: Daniil Medvedev slugged $122,000 for smashing camera, snubbing media
Daniil Medvedev had a tumultuous Australian Open – leaving the tournament in the second round after snubbing the media and smashing a camera. And he’s copped a massive punishment because of it.
Temperamental Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has been whacked with $122,000 worth of fines after his early exit from the Australian Open.
Already public enemy No. 1 with Aussie tennis fans for his history of bad behaviour on court, Medvedev once again lived up to his well earned reputation as one of the most ill-mannered players in the game by getting pinged in each of the matches he played in.
The short-fused world No. 5 copped a $16,000 fine for his misconduct in his first round win over Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej when he blew his top and destroyed a net camera, which he’s also being sent the bill for.
Then in his second round loss to American teenager Learner Tien, he went ballistic, taunting a line judge by pretending he was going to smash a ball towards the officials after he was twice called for a foot fault.
He was given an instant point deduction for his, which contributed to him losing the second set in a tie-breaker, then was slapped with an additional $106,000 fine over his ‘inappropriate behaviour’.
A finalist in three of the past four Australian Open, Medvedev only made $200,000 this time after crashing out in the second out, and is having to forfeit more than half of that. Not that it worry the new dad, who has made over $72 million in career earnings.
Aussie fans will be delighted though because the mad Russian hasn’t exactly endeared himself to the Melbourne Park crowds in the past, previously mocking their IQs and accusing them of ruining his love of the sport.
And it’s just Aussie fans Medvedev has had run-ins with. He’s also gone ballistic at the US Open.
