‘I’m speechless’: Aussies left in tears as Barty ‘pandemonium’ takes over country
Ash Barty’s drought-breaking Australian Open win overwhelmed the nation, including several commentators watching on.
Aussies across the country have reacted to Ash Barty’s drought-breaking Australian Open win.
Despite trailing Danielle Collins 1-5 in the second set, Barty pulled off a remarkable comeback to force it into a tiebreak, which she dominated to storm to victory.
Former world No.4 Jelena Dokic was one of several emotional onlookers for Barty.

CROWD CHAOS: US star melts down over crowd taunts
“Absolutely incredible. I think everyone is getting emotional. Amazing. Of the after women than last year her childhood dream to win the Australian open, the first woman to do so in 44 years, amazing,” she said on Channel Nine.
“Incredible what she has been able to do.
“We have been through a lot, Melbourne has been through a lot, Melbourne has been through a lot, Ash Barty wins it. Could not have been better.”
Former Australian Open champion Jim Courier was impressed with the Rod Laver Arena crowd, which roared to life in its bid to help Barty to victory, as well as Barty herself.
“She has bided her time. A lot of players when they get to the top, they go chasing whatever it is that top players can chase whether it is endorsements or appearance fees,” she said.
“She has been extraordinarily patient and smart with the schedule. Allowed herself to be fresh. She finished her career last year before the European championship and she came home, said that she would rest and train and be ready in January, I will not be tired but I will be fresh.
“And what a January she has had. Started with a win in singles and doubles in Adelaide. She got much tougher and then she came here and nobody could really give her a match except for Danielle Collins.”
Thatâs one of the sporting achievements of our lifetime

Former British ladies’ No.1 Sam Smith said Barty’s game had paid homage to former tennis greats.
“Watching her tonight I feel that she has absorbed all the players of the past, Margaret Court Arena Evonne Goolagong Cawley and even Chris O’Neill, the one-time surprise champion, even some of the male players like Rod Laver, they are all in her game, you can see them,” she said.

A huge hug and a kiss on the forehand for Casey Dellacqua, Barty's first pro doubles partner, the woman who played such a huge role in her journey into (and out of, and back into) this sport.
