Ash Barty could become world No.1 after Birmingham Classic win
With three wins, Ash Barty can become our first women’s world no.1 since Evonne Goolagong.
Ash Barty could soon become Australia’s first women’s world No.1 since her indigenous mentor Evonne Goolagong.
The 23-year-old marched into the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic with a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over American Jennifer Brady.
Naomi Osaka’s 6-2 6-3 loss to unseeded Kazakh Yulia Putintseva means that Barty will move to No.1 in the world rankings next week if she wins the Birmingham final — a feat she almost achieved last year when she made the final.
Barty’s victory was the Queenslander’s ninth victory in a row and sets up a clash tonight with five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, who recorded a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over sixth seed Wang Qiang, of China.
With Naomi Osaka's loss today, Ash Barty would reach #1 with a title in Birmingham. She'd be 2 (two) points behind Osaka with a final.
