Super Netball Top 50: The best players in the country ranked | Helen Housby v Courtney Bruce
The Super Netball season is just days away, but who is the best player in the league? EMMA GREENWOOD dives into the debate and comes up with 2024’s Top 50 netball stars. See the full list inside, and have your say.
There’s a new queen in town with NSW Swifts and England shooter Helen Housby claiming top spot in Code Sports’ Top 50 ahead of the 2024 season.
Housby is at the top of her game after leading the Swifts to last year’s grand final before claiming player of the tournament honours at last year’s World Cup in South Africa and she has lost none of the ability or swagger that make her the most feared shooter in world netball.
Whether it’s a regular-season Super Netball outing, the final seconds of the grand final or the World Cup decider, Housby wants the ball in her hands and pressure on her shoulders when the result is on the line.
She wants to take the decisive shot and more often than not, it goes in.
The England goal attack, who was also nominated as the best player in the competition by three of the eight Super Netball captains, beats out Diamonds and Sunshine Coast Lightning defender Courtney Bruce and last year’s winner Jhaniele Fowler in a stellar top three.
Both Bruce and Fowler had outstanding campaigns last season, Bruce winning a second Liz Ellis Diamond award as Australia’s best player, while Fowler led Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls to a World Cup medal.
But as one of those rare players whose performance raises in proportion to the pressure of the situation, Housby takes the cake.
In the toughest competition in the world, she reigns supreme as the top dog heading into season 2024.
