Stephen Hoiles apologises for Eddie Jones presser
Former Wallabies forward Stephen Hoiles has apologised to England coach Eddie Jones over ‘offensive’ question.
Former Wallabies loose forward Stephen Hoiles has apologised to England coach Eddie Jones for a question put to him during a post-match news conference.
Hoiles, working for Fox Sports’ The ‘Other’ Rugby Show, opened the program on Wednesday night by admitting he had got it wrong after his former Australian coach labelled him disrespectful.
“The other night after the game at Suncorp Stadium we tried to have a bit of banter with Eddie Jones during the post-match press conference and unfortunately the questions that were asked were inappropriate and offensive,” Hoiles said.
“So we put our hand up and apologise to Eddie and the English rugby team.
“We got it wrong and it was never our intention to take anything away from the really good performance on Saturday night by the English team.” The segment, which is believed to have had Hoiles complete a number of tasks set by the show, did not go to air.
Hoiles’ question in Saturday’s news conference following England’s 39-28 win over Australia was met with bewilderment on social media.
“The lads were pumped up, there was a bit of moisture out there and I think you and Glen (Ella) had a good moment, looked lubed up and a fair bit of shrinkage,” Hoiles posed to Jones on Saturday. “How did you enjoy that moment with your old mate Glen up in the box?”
Jones told Hoiles at the time he didn’t like the tone of the question before later describing Fox Sports’ treatment of the series as “demeaning and disrespectful to the team”.
