'Nothing short of a disaster' What happened to the Matildas?

Simone Biles’ legend continues to grow and the boxing gender furore has exploded again on day six of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Here are five things you missed while you were sleeping.

Golden girls power Australia to relay glory

Australia has won a fifth gold medal in swimming at the Paris Olympics with a convincing victory in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus joined forces to win the gold in a time of 7:38.08, the second fastest time in history.

The United States took the silver medal - a massive 2.86 seconds behind the Australians - with China collecting the bronze.

With just three days of swimming left, the Aussies lead the gold medal count by one from the United States.

Gender debate ignites after boxing farce

In dramatic scenes at the Paris Olympic boxing, Italian fighter Angela Carini, two time world champion, has abandoned the bout against controversial Algerian boxer Imane Khelif after just 40 seconds.

Khelif was the boxer who failed a sex test at last year’s world championships but was allowed to compete in the women’s Olympic welterweight preliminaries.

In the lead up to the bout there had been concerns expressed by female boxers that it was unsafe to box against athletes with high testosterone and XY chromosomes.

Khelif failed biochemical tests in the past two years and was banned from competing in a gold-medal bout in Delhi by the International Boxing Association.

The Algerian broke Carini’s nose with just two punches. One knocked the chin strap, the second broke her nose.

“I have never been hit so hard in my life. It’s up to the IOC to judge,” Carini said after being brought to tears.

Opals break Canada hoodoo

Canada has been leaving a trail of broken Australian hearts across Paris this Olympics but, finally, an Aussie team got one back.

The resilient Opals have defied injuries and busted up bodies to keep their Paris Olympic podium dream alive with a courageous 70-65 win over Canada.

The Australian women must now beat host nation France on Sunday to secure their position in the second round.

Fortunately they’ll head into the French clash full of confidence after reviving their Paris Games campaign with a dramatically improved performance compared to their forgettable display against Nigeria.

The Opals still had eight turnovers in the opening 11 minutes and 20 in total, but they rediscovered their shooting mojo to sneak past the Canadians.

Kookaburras destroy New Zealand to enter quarters

Australian flag bearer Eddie Ockenden says he isn’t ruling out a remarkable push for a sixth Olympic games after his diving save encapsulated the Kookaburras’ desperation in sealing a Paris quarter finals berth.

Australia beat Trans Tasman rival New Zealand for the third Olympics in a row to notch their third pool game from four contests, assuring them of a quarter finals berth

It took a freakish mid-air deflection from Tokyo Olympics hero Tom Wickham and an Olympic hat trick from lethal striker Blake Govers to set up that 5-0 rout.

Biles wows Paris with more gymnastics gold

Simone Biles, the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history, has added another gold to her collection after a nail-biting finish to the women’s all-around competition.

Biles was neck-and-neck with Brazilian Rebeca Andrade throughout the night and headed into the final rotation, floor, with a lead of just .166.

Andrade was second-last to perform her routine, and posted a score of 14.033 - the highest floor score of the night so far.

Then, it was all up to Biles to bring it home.

With nerves of steel, she executed a stunning routine to record a score of 15.066 and clinch the gold.

Andrade took silver, and 2020 gold medallist American Sunisa Lee took bronze.
