Tahleya Eggers says there was no pressure to delete tweet criticising Scott Morrison

Tahleya Eggers stands by her criticism of Prime Minister Scott Morrison despite deleting the viral tweet from her account.

Eels staffer deletes tweet that slammed Scott Morrison after her viral death-stare video

Parramatta Eels sports scientist Tahleya Eggers has broken her silence about her viral tweet that was critical of Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Eggers now-deleted post included a screenshot of her with her arms crossed in the Parramatta dressing room while the PM shook hands with Eels players in the foreground. It was accompanied with a statement that said she would not “respect” Mr Morrison because of his lack of action on women’s issues.

“Proud to claim this one,” Eggers wrote on Sunday morning at 8.07am. “I will not respect a man who has the time to shake hands of men who have won a football match but is ‘too busy’ to attend the March for Justice.”

But around eight hours after the tweet was sent, the post which attracted nearly 6000 likes was deleted and her profile was made private.

Eggers released the statement via the Parramatta Eels on Monday and a club official said she did so because she was “concerned” that her NRL club had been blamed for deleting the post.

Eggers said she has felt “nothing but support” from the club over the period and had not been asked to remove or change her social media post.

“I wanted to make a brief statement regarding the last 24hrs,” the statement distributed by the Eels on behalf of Eggers read.

“As the Club stated yesterday, I was responding to a social media meme that was not of my making. These are my personal views and I didn’t expect that it would get the coverage that it has.

“I want to make clear that I have had nothing but support from the Club over this period. At no stage has anyone asked me to remove or change my post.

“It was my decision to remove it and place my social media on private because of the level of attention I was receiving.

“I love working for the Club and would now like the focus to return to the NRL season ahead.

“I won’t be making any further comment on the matter.”

While Eggers deleted her original tweet, it has since been reposted several times with the Parramatta sports scientist’s words and picture in support of her stance.

The Australian understands that despite reports, at no time the Parramatta Eels considered or saw a need to sanction Eggers.

On Sunday, the club posted a photo of the Prime Minister meeting with the team alongside the caption, “He’s ours now @Cronulla_Sharks”.

Mr Morrison has been criticised for his handling of numerous allegations including the alleged rape of former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins at Parliament House, plus harassment and other misogynistic behaviour within the government.
