South Sydney Rabbitohs take Allianz Stadium fight to next level, calling for a return to their ‘heartland’
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have taken their fight for a move to Allianz Stadium to social media, calling for a return to their ‘heartland’. But the Roosters were quick to respond.
A petition for South Sydney to return to their “heartland” of Allianz Stadium has been backed by NSW Origin star Latrell Mitchell.
Mitchell, who is on a self-imposed media ban, has taken to Instagram to share a link to the petition, which was launched by Rabbitohs member Luke Carroll, and as of Thursday afternoon, had been signed by over 3000 fans and members.
The Rabbitohs are attempting to share the $800-million stadium at Moore Park in 2026 with arch rivals the Sydney Roosters, who Mitchell won two premierships with, and A-League club, Sydney FC.
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly has made his feelings clear on the club’s desire to move venues, due to the lack of progress on the planned upgrade of Accor Stadium from the NSW State Government.
Club chairman Nick Pappas and Solly have already held talks with the premier Chris Minns in a bid to back their hopes of returning closer to their spiritual home of Redfern.
While plans for an upgrade have been discussed for years, the NSW Government have failed to follow through with funding towards Accor Stadium.
“We strongly believe a move to Allianz Stadium will allow us to provide members, fans and sponsors with an enhanced game-day experience, premium facilities, improved transport access, and centre proximity for our supporter base, returning to our Heartland in South Sydney,’’ Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly says in the club’s Instagram post.
The Roosters were quick to hit back at the Rabbitohs with a tongue in cheek response, reporting Souths’ post as ‘false information’.
South Sydney have called Accor Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park home since 2006.
The Rabbitohs are currently contracted to play their home fixtures at Accor Stadium until 2030.
However, this deal was signed under the condition that Accor Stadium be renovated.
