Parramatta Eels veteran Michael Jennings could be up for grabs
Parramatta centre Michael Jennings is yet to take up an option in his contract for next season and could be on the move.
Evergreen Parramatta centre Michael Jennings celebrated his 32nd birthday earlier this year, but it is hard to remember a time when he has played better for the resurgent Eels.
Remarkably, it emerged on Monday that he was up for grabs. Jennings has an option in his contract for next season and he is yet to take it up, meaning he is effectively a free agent and able to talk to rival clubs.
The Eels remain optimistic that they will strike a deal for him to stay at the club, but in the meantime Jennings’ name has appeared on the radar of rivals as he and Parramatta enjoy a remarkable renaissance.
Jennings has made 95 appearances for the Eels over the past five seasons, proving a sage and solid presence in a backline sprinkled with youth.
It helps explain why rival clubs have taken an interest in Jennings in the twilight of his career. You could easily see Jennings providing balance to a backline at Canterbury, perhaps partnering and mentoring Nick Cotric when he arrives next year.
At the same time, the Eels would be loath to lose him given the impact he has and continues to have on their side. Age shall not weary him. This season alone he has seven tries from 10 games, including a double against Manly on Saturday. The Sydney Roosters have been improved by the presence of the Morris twins — Josh and Brett — this season as the pair of 30-somethings prepare to sign contract extensions to play on next year.
Melbourne captain Cameron Smith will make a decision in coming weeks about whether he continues on next season. Jennings is intent on doing so and no one could blame him given his form.
The Eels’ rivals recognise that and interest has been expressed. The ball is now believed to be in Parramatta’s court, although the club is confident it has a strong relationship with Jennings and his preference would be to stay.
Meanwhile, Manly is expected to name front rower Addin Fonua-Blake in its side on Tuesday as the Sea Eagles prepare for a trip to Townsville to face North Queensland.
It is understood Sea Eagles officials were optimistic on Monday night that Fonua-Blake would be cleared to play by the Queensland government.
Fonua-Blake was one of several players who refused to take flu jabs as part of the game’s biosecurity protocols. As of the weekend, he was yet to have the shot although The Australian understands the club is growing increasingly confident of a breakthrough.
“I am not really sure on that situation,” winger Reuben Garrick said. “Either way, it his choice there. Whatever he decides either way, I will support him.”
The more prevalent issue for Sea Eagles players on Monday was the need to back up their win over the Eels by beating the Cowboys at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Manly is still without star fullback Tom Trbojevic, although he could be back in the next fortnight.
