Here’s to an avalanche of cheapies and no injuries!

CANBERRA RAIDERS V CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND SHARKS

Thurs February 13 2025, 7:50pm at GIO Stadium Canberra

SuperCoach analysis:

-Raiders fullback Kaeo Weekes impressed early but was pulled from the field after less than 20 minutes.

-Nicho Hynes took a bit of back seat in the kicking game, but was running the ball regularly, scored a try backing up and ignited the Sharks comeback. But the big question mark is over who will kick goals, with Hynes converting their first try, before Trindall took over the duties.

-Referee’s are continuing to call out sloppy play the balls and each one is going down as an error and costing players SuperCoach points.

Fonua-Blake shines in Pre-Season Challenge week 2

-Addin Fonua-Blake did not play big minutes in the first half, but did have another stint in the second and surprise, surprise, he scored a try after barging over four defenders. I guess the try scoring will continue in 2025!

-Sam Stonestreet was solid, scoring one try in the first half but bombed an easy one in the second. Has he done enough to start over Sione Katoa?

-Ethan Strange impressed, while Ethan Sanders didn’t do too much when he came on the field so I think its safe to say the Raiders will run with Strange and Jamal Fogarty in the halves.

-Into the starting side with Joe Tapine in Maori All Stars camp, Trey Mooney impressed, scoring 50 points. Could be one too watch.

Speed to BURN – Weekes full field effort

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS V PARRAMATTA EELS

Fri February 14 2025, 6:00pm at McDonald Jones Stadium

SuperCoach analysis:

-The 5/8 position is pretty bleak in 2025 but Dylan Brown looked the goods in this pre-season match and is showing no ill-effects from the knee injury that ended his 2024 season.

-Some really promising signs from popular cheapie Isaiah Iongi, who had a try assist and a linebreak assist before being pulled from the field, with Joash Papalii also really impressing at the back … could Papalii potentially start over Iongi?

-Kelma Tuilagi looked good for Parra and may have done enough to win a starting spot

-The halves situation at the Knights is still no clearer, with Fletcher Sharpe by far the most impressive in this trial, while Jackson Hastings, Jack Cogger and Tyson Gamble all having some nice touches. Hastings also spent some time in the middle and could be used as a ball playing lock.

Cowboys v Dolphins trial

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS V DOLPHINS

Fri February 14 2025, 8:00pm (7:00pm local) at Barlow Park

SuperCoach analysis:

– Oh boy, what an ugly game of footy. Not only was the game hard to watch but there was very little to take out of it from a SuperCoach perspective. Cowboys winger Robert Derby was reportedly in contention for a starting role, and while he ended up with a try, it was otherwise a pretty poor performance and we can probably rule him out.

-Coen Hess was also pretty underwhelming in his first game back from an ACL injury and the 6.9% of SuperCoaches who own him may want to move on.

NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS V MELBOURNE STORM

Sat February 15 2025, 1:30pm (3:30pm local) at FMG Stadium Waikato

SuperCoach analysis:

-Luke Metcalf once again impressed at halfback for the Warriors and now looks like a must-have considering how underpriced he is

-Roger Tuivasa-Scheck looked good on the wing for the Warriors and I think he could very well be their top tryscorer in 2025.

-Not much to take out of this one for Storm, except that despite not being terrible, I think I’ve seen enough to stay away from Stefano Utoikamanu this year, after finishing the first half with just two runs for 16 metres

-Ali Leiataua scored two tries and ended up on 103 SuperCoach points and looks like he’s done enough to lock down a starting spot for the Warriors

Warriors thump Storm in NRL trial

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS V MANLY-WARRINGAH SEA EAGLES

Sat February 15 2025, 3:30pm at Industree Group Stadium

SuperCoach analysis:

-Lehi Hopoate impressed at fullback, but has he done enough to earn a round one starting spot for Manly?

-Rookie Manly centre Clayton Faulalo impressed, setting up a try and kicking goals. He is very unlikely to start the season but could be one to watch if injuries strike.

-Lewis Dodd did not impress in his first game for the Rabbitohs, failing to really pressure what was essentially a reserve grade Manly side. Interestingly Jamie Humphreys was a late withdrawal … perhaps in a sign he is ahead in the halfback race? Time will tell.

-Manly’s hooker battle is still not much clearer after this trial match, with Gordon Cham Kum Tong impressive in patches, while Jake Simpkin scoring a try to come out on top.

-Popular SuperCoach cheapie Peter Mamouzelos was also not super impressive with the ball in hand, but did make a team high 27-tackles.

MAORI ALL STARS V INDIGENOUS ALL STARS

Sat February 15 2025, 8.10pm at CommBank Stadium

SuperCoach analysis:

-Manly recruit Jazz Tevaga was solid filling in at hooker for the Maori side.

-Both Kalyn Ponga and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow showed glimpses of brilliance but were well contained in this game.

-Roosters hooker Connor Watson impressed with both ball in hand and in defence

-Bulldogs forward Josh Curran got through a heap of work and looked to have scored a try before the bunker intervened

-Tigers outside back Brent Naden was a standout for the Indigenous side, producing a brilliant try-saving tackle on Mawene Hiroti, before coming agonisingly close to scoring a matchwinning try.

-Jayden Campbell impressed in the halves for the Titans last year, but if this game was anything to go by he looks like a player to avoid in 2025. Was well contained and couldn’t capitalise on a mountain of first half possession.
