SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 27

It was quite simply the Jahrome Hughes show.

The classy halfback who is the raging hot Dally M favourite produced a top-20 SuperCoach score of all time as the Storm put the Broncos to the sword in a big way.

But who else starred and flopped? We take a look in our SuperCoach Winners and Losers.

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Jahrome Hughes (181) – Who else could you possibly have on top besides Hughes? He produced the highest score of the past two seasons by simply dominating the Broncos and capping it off with a hat-trick of tries.

2. Will Warbrick (157) – Speaking of hat-tricks, Will Warbrick had two in the first half to break the century inside 40 minutes, and then picked up a third to finish with an incredible score.

3. Harry Grant (83) – Grant is just such a reliable player. Even while other players were shining around him he still found a way to grind his way to 83, with the benefit of a very soft try.

4. Nick Meaney (85) – He absolutely should’ve cracked the century if not for bombing a sitter early on in the contest. Still he picked up plenty of boots with his accurate boot and a try assist.

5. Eli Katoa (68) – Has been one of the finds of the season with his ability to score a try making him one of the most popular second rowers in the game. A second half sin bin hurt his score though.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Adam Reynolds (18) – It’s been an unhappy fortnight for the Broncos and nothing sums it up like their main man being unable to produce the goods. Had little chance but didn’t do much when it came his way.

2. Corey Oates (14) – He was targeted from the outset by the Storm as they sent everything in his direction. Wasn’t his best outing but didn’t get a lot of help from his inside men in his defence.

3. Fletcher Baker (20) – Started the game and played 31 minutes in the front row, but in a forward pack that was completely dominated, Baker did nothing of note and came up with a low score.

4. Pat Carrigan (39) – Nothing tells you the Broncos are struggling like Patty Carrigan failing to break past 40 points in SuperCoach. Played just the 53 minutes and gave his all during that time.

5. Cameron Munster (46) – Certainly not a knock on Munster’s game. He knew what he had to do, let Hughes take over. The halfback certainly did that and Munster’s SC score took a hit as a result.

RELIVE ALL OF THE ACTION FROM BRONCOS VS STORM

FULL-TIME – Storm 50-12

It was a clinical performance from the Storm from start to finish.

At no stage did the Broncos look a winning hope and Melbourne has the perfect tune-up before a clash with Cronulla next week.

70th minute – Storm 50-12

Eli Katoa has been sent to the sin bin for a late, high shot on Tristan Sailor.

The referee allowed the set to play through, or he was given the tip off from the Bunker at the last moment.

Either way the Storm are down to 12 men.

The very next set the Broncos are in for their second try.

Selwyn Cobbo is able to draw two defenders in and finds an unmarked Jesse Arthars to score.

In some better news for Melbourne, Will Warbrick is over for his third try of the night as they crack the half century.

60th minute – Storm 46-6

The scoring run of Melbourne continues and Xavier Coates has a try in his return game.

It’s an easy one for the winger with Sua Fa’alago putting in a lovely grubber and he simply has to dive and push the ball down.

There was nobody in front of him.

In a slight concern for the Storm, Fa’alago has come off the field limping with what appears to be a hamstring concern.

Jahrome Hughes has his third try of the night after Will Warbrick leaps to catch a bomb and passes it inside.

50th minute – Storm 34-6

Brisbane applied some pressure early in the half, but errors have continually let Melbourne off the hook.

Then it’s another mistake that allows the Storm to roll upfield, and Jahrome Hughes is ruled to have scored.

But Hughes gets up and looks very unsure that he scored – he certainly can’t be accused of being a fibber.

The Bunker gives it the all-clear however, with the ball touching a single blade of grass to get the green light.

HALFTIME – Storm 28-6

Finally the Broncos have something to cheer about.

Blake Mozer with some nice deception out of dummy half, gets a run-around play with Marty Taupau going and hits Josh Rogers short to get Brisbane on the board.

Just as it looked like Brisbane might finish the half on a high, Harry Grant scoots out of dummy half and gets through two defenders with ease.

It was a purple half and unless something changes, they’re likely to hit the half century.

30th minute – Storm 22-0

Eli Katoa has carried two defenders over the line to score.

That is incredibly poor defence and the Storm are on their way to a monster score tonight.

Yes he hit the ball at speed, but someone has to bend their back and try to bring him down.

Brisbane needs to show some pride for its home fans.

Melbourne has been able to create another two big chances but the landings haven’t stuck – and that is the only thing saving the home side from further punishment.

In one of the biggest blown chances of the evening, Jahrome Hughes puts a lovely grubber into the in-goal, but Nick Meaney drops a sitter over the line.

20th minute – Storm 16-0

That was far too easy once again for the Storm.

Will Warbrick has a double in the space of minutes to double the lead.

He was able to get on the outside of Corey Oates with some nice work from his inside men.

Uncharacteristically the Storm drop it on the first tackle from the kick-off.

They get a set restart and Tristan Sailor kicks on the first tackle. This could get ugly.

Warbrick makes another break down the right-hand side, passes inside to Nick Meaney who finds Jahrome Hughes and the Broncos concede another try.

10th minute – Storm 6-0

Fair credit to Brisbane, they’ve started with a solid intent and have been able to get to their kick early.

Deine Mariner made a nice little burst for Brisbane, but it was completely eclipsed by a huge kick return from Sua Fa’alago to turn defence into attack.

He gets it from near his own goal-line to down inside Brisbane’s 30.

They can’t capitalise with Jack Howarth spilling the ball when trying to ground the ball.

Soon after they have their first points with a rampant Will Warbrick stepping inside and it opened up far too easily.

7.50PM: The final round of the regular season is underway at Suncorp Stadium.

Will Brisbane finish the year on a high or will Melbourne pick up another win before the finals?

7.20PM: It’s all systems go for the Storm as they look to sprint into the post-season with a big win.

They’ve named a very strong team to take on the Broncos tonight, and with Brisbane having nothing to play for many are predicting a big Storm victory.

Tonight will serve as an audition for a few fringe players to ensure they are there next week in the side.

Sua Faalago will put his hand up for the #14 jersey with a good performance in place of Ryan Papenhuyzen who is out with injury.

The only problem is with Xavier Coates coming back, will he be able to bump Tyran Wishart or Grant Anderson from that spot?

The only certainty is that 4pm on Tuesday will make for very interesting reading.

6.50PM: A stacked Melbourne side has added another star player to its 17 ahead of tonight’s clash with Brisbane.

Xavier Coates is a late inclusion on the wing with Grant Anderson dropping to 18th man – giving him a rest after he was one of the few regulars to play last week against North Queensland.

After impressing last week, Lazarus Vaalepu gets another stint on the bench.

Brisbane remains 1-17 from the side named on Tuesday.

EARLIER: After resting a whopping 11 players in Round 26, Melbourne Storm have opted to name a near-full strength side, as they look to end the regular season with some revenge against the Broncos.

The Broncos stunned Melbourne in week one of the finals last year, winning 26-0, despite going down to Storm 32-22 just one week earlier.

But things are different this year, with Melbourne four points clear at the top of the ladder, while the Broncos’ finals hopes are over. And SuperCoaches will be hoping Melbourne punish them.

Eliesa Katoa is back in action this week after being one of the many players rested last week, and is the most owned Storm player heading into this round, while Harry Grant isn’t far behind him. Both have been solid in recent weeks, with a 3RA’s of 72 and 75 respectively.

With Roosters star Sam Walker out for the season with an ACL injury, SuperCoaches have flocked to Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes, who is the second most purchased player of the round so far. Given his 3RA of 87.3 and the great matchup against a Broncos side who conceded 40 points to the Dolphins, Hughes looks to be a great vice-captaincy option this week.

Cameron Munster is a bit of a POD at 8.8% ownership before this week, and is coming off his second best score of the season, after scoring 102 points against the Cowboys last weekend.

Ryan Papenhuyzen is out for this clash with bone bruising and is understandably the eighth most sold player of the round.

At the Broncos there really aren’t many positives for SuperCoaches. Pat Carrigan is the most owned Bronco at just 15.5% ownership, and the next highest is Payne Haas at 11.6% and Xavier Willison, neither of whom are even playing due to injury and suspension respectively.

Many SuperCoaches clearly haven’t checked team lists or late mail, with Haas the 8th most purchased player despite not being named. So be sure to reverse that trade, before it’s too late!
