SuperCoach NRL: 20 Winners and Losers from Sea Eagles vs Raiders, Broncos vs Roosters

It was a memorable night for the Roosters and for SuperCoaches who backed the Chooks players in. See the 20 Winners and Losers from Friday Night Footy.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 9

It feels like we say this every Friday, but what an eventful night of footy it was.

From Canberra overturning an 18-point deficit to deny Manly at Brookvale, to the Roosters sending out a statement in the form of a 22-point demolition of Brisbane.

Then there was the sad news.

Adam Reynolds looks set to miss a large chunk of the season with a bicep injury, and Jesse Arthars has a suspected broken jaw after a sickening collision.

There were also some huge SuperCoach scores posted, as we look back on the Winners and Losers from Fright Night Footy.

SUPERCOACH WINNERS

1. Angus Crichton (136 pts) – If you’re not on the Gus Bus, you’re missing out. Continued his stellar run of form with a double.

2. Terrell May (119 pts) – This is the game May HODLers were waiting for. Two tries and over 50 minutes. Keep that time coming please Robbo.

3. James Tedesco (122 pts) – After dropping to under $600k, Tedesco put in his second best score of the season and raised the bat in style.

4. Elliott Whitehead (100 pts) – How good did he look in his return. Was superb and deserving of a century.

5. Connor Watson (119 pts) – He scored big last week and backed it up with another whopper. That could change with Victor Radley’s return.

6. Reuben Garrick (92 pts) – Plenty put their faith in him this week and he delivered with two tries and another big score.

7. Ezra Mam (83 pts) – Top-scored for the Broncos tonight and will have to take on more of the load in the coming weeks.

8. Tom Trbojevic (90 pts) – Was the most polarising player in the game ahead of this round given the debate with Trai Fuller. If you stuck with him, you can be content with his score.

9. Kaeo Weekes (64 pts) – A genuine cheapie option who looks like he has locked down the halfback jersey for the foreseeable future. Played really well.

10. Dom Young (77 pts) – Dipped below $565k and you get the feeling he could’ve easily had a ton tonight.

SUPERCOACH LOSERS

1. Brandon Smith (12 pts) – Looked gassed early and played just the 22 minutes with a suspected calf injury.

2. Selwyn Cobbo (17 pts) – Averaging over 63 for the season, but sadly for owners produced his worst score of 2024.

3. Deine Mariner (8 pts) – Spent some time in the sin bin and struggled to have much of an impact tonight.

4. Jason Saab (17 pts) – We know what he can do when he’s in full flight. Tonight was not one of those nights.

5. Billy Walters (19 pts) – Just 19 points from his 64 minutes on the field. That’s a tough scene.

6. Xavier Savage (13 pts) – Can almost copy and paste the description from Saab. Didn’t happen for Savage unfortunately.

7. Albert Hopoate (17 pts) – That’s not a sustainable score from a player lining up at fullback, even though he’s listed as a CTW.

8. Jesse Arthars (5 pts) – In a similar boat to Reynolds. Went off early and likely to be out for a few weeks at least.

9. Adam Reynolds (16 pts) – Such a blow for the Broncos to see him go down with a serious injury that could derail their season.

10. Emre Guler (8 pts) – Was given just the 25 minutes of playing time, but couldn’t do much from a SC perspective.

BRONCOS VS ROOSTERS

FULL-TIME - Roosters 40-18

Dominic Young puts the finishing touches on a memorable performance for the Roosters with a try in the corner as they hit 40.

It was a strong effort from the visitors at Suncorp Stadium, but the major headline is Broncos halfback Adam Reynolds going off with a ruptured bicep and Jesse Arthars with a suspected broken jaw.

It was a night of carnage that could have long term impacts for the Broncos.

70th minute - Roosters 36-18

Ezra Mam came from the field for a HIA to leave the Broncos without both starting halves. Don’t be surprised if Allan Langer trades the trainers shirt for a jersey soon.

The task has become much tougher for the Broncos with Connor Watson pushing the margin back out to 12 after a number of sets on their line.

Brisbane is depleted and cannot hold on any longer.

Those who have held onto Terrell May in their SuperCoach are partying right now after he picks up his second try of the evening.

60th minute - Roosters 24-18

It’s been a remarkable start to this half and it continues with Deine Mariner spending time in the sin bin for a shoulder charge on James Tedesco.

The Roosters almost score from the very next set but Dom Young fumbles it over the line.

Angus Crichton has cracked the SC century with 101 points.

Terrell May was the lucky man in the right place as the Broncos were caught short for numbers after a break, rewarding loyal SuperCoach honours and giving the visitors the lead once again.

50th minute - 18-all

Just when things can’t get worse for Brisbane, Adam Reynolds has come from the field with what appears to be an injured bicep.

It’s been confirmed from the sideline that he has ruptured his bicep. That is a cruel blow.

It comes just moments after the news Jesse Arthars has a suspected broken jaw after his collision with Dom Young.

They find the courage to muster an attack and score first in the second half with Kotoni Staggs helping them cut the lead back to six after Reece Walsh slots the goal from the sideline.

With the very next set they tie it up after Walsh turns Staggs inside, finding a chasing Ezra Mam who burns off James Tedesco with pure speed.

HALFTIME - Roosters 18-6

Been a bit of a strange half, but a good one nonetheless.

Brisbane started all guns blazing and scored first, but the Roosters held their composure to hit back in style with two of their own.

Then in the shadows of the halftime buzzer, a Reece Walsh mistake is punished on the counter with Angus Crichton scoring his second after some nice lead-up work from the backs.

They are in an incredible position.

30th minute - Roosters 12-6

Angus Crichton has made his way into many SuperCoach teams in recent weeks, and for good reason.

He’s had a great start to this game and powers his way over from close range to give the Roosters their first lead of the contest with a try.

He now sits on 71 SuperCoach points.

They’ll be very happy to be in front after Brisbane had all the early running.

20th minute - 6-all

Danger signs for Brisbane.

The Roosters score with their first real chance, with Dom Young being dragged towards the sideline, but able to get the offload away to hit Joey Manu on the chest to cross the line.

This has all the makings of a classic early.

Jesse Arthars attempts a big shot on Young and cops an accidental shoulder to the head. He will come from the field for a HIA.

Jordan Riki leads the SC tally with 41, narrowly ahead of Manu’s 36.

10th minute - Broncos 6-0

They’ve started the better side, and the Broncos post first points on the back of a nice play from Ezra Mam.

He takes on the line and puts Jordan Riki into a gap to score.

Expect to hear more in the Roosters press conference about a possible obstruction in the lead-up.

7.55PM: Just the two changes for the Roosters and that was known yesterday with the withdrawal of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Daniel Tupou.

Naufahu Whyte (2RF $357,700) will start with JWH out and Sitili Tupouniua (2RF $365,100) comes onto the interchange bench.

It’s a cruel blow for Terrell May (FRF $507,700) owners as they continue to beg Robbo to give him more minutes.

Junior Pauga (CTW $505,400) comes onto the wing in place of Tupou.

The Broncos are 1-17 in a big relief for supporters and SuperCoaches alike.

SEA EAGLES VS RAIDERS

FULL-TIME - Canberra 26-24

The miracle comeback was completed by the Raiders.

Ethan Strange dabs the grubber in behind the line with Tom Trbojevic nowhere to be seen and Hudson Young gets onto the end of it to score.

They were down 24-6 with 30 minutes to play.

What a comeback.

70th minute - Manly 24-22

Can you believe it, the Raiders have got back to within two points.

Kaeo Weekes catches Tom Trbojevic out of position and puts a kick in behind the line, with Nick Cotric just staying in the field of play to touch down in the corner.

60th minute - Manly 24-18

Elliott Whitehead is having a brilliant return game.

He crosses the line to keep the Raiders in the contest after spinning through the defence from close range.

You can make that a double for Whitehead who pounces on a dropped ball from Corey Waddell and is on his way to a monster score.

51st minute - Manly 24-6

From the moment Reuben Garrick touched the ball 10m out from the Raiders line you knew he was going to score.

That’s his second for the night and throwing the big dummy paid dividends as he touches down in the corner.

While it was a tough attempt from the touchline, his shot at goal wouldn’t have hit two sets of posts.

He now has 90 SC points.

HALFTIME - Manly 20-6

That’s better from the Raiders.

Elliott Whitehead takes an intercept, slides before the ball hits the ground, and flicks it onto Kaeo Weekes who races away to score.

It was their only highlight of the half, but they’ll take a bit of momentum into the break.

30th minute - Manly 20-0

This is starting to get ugly for the Raiders.

Daly Cherry-Evans puts in a grubber, Ethan Strange can’t regather the ball and DCE picks up the scraps to score.

The only thing keeping the Raiders in the game is the stray boot of Reuben Garrick.

Now Albert Hopoate will spend 10 minutes in the sin bin after being penalised for repeated infringements.

Chalk up a try assist for Tom Trbojevic. He spins out of a tackle and almost bombs it, but gets the ball away and Garrick is over.

20th minute - Manly 10-0

Tommy Talau is off and gone.

A stray pass from Matt Timoko is unable to be gathered in by Elliott Whitehead.

Talau had no such issues, scrambling on the loose ball to race 60m to score and push the lead out to 10.

Reuben Garrick missed the relatively easy shot at goal.

11th minute - Manly 6-0

Relentless pressure had to tell, and Manly finally cracks Canberra.

They had a wealth of possession and territory, with a beautiful trick play from Luke Brooks and Tom Trbojevic allowing the fullback to post first points.

That will have plenty of people regretting the decision to sell him coming into this weekend.

5.30PM: The big judiciary news came earlier in the week when Daly Cherry-Evans (HFB $809,200) was cleared to play in this contest.

It was a huge sigh of relief for a number of SuperCoaches, with his recent form proving him to be a great inclusion in sides.

Despite four of his last scores at 77 or above, 835 have opted to trade DCE out, compared to 277 trading the most capped Sea Eagle in.

He’s cracked the century twice so far in 2024.

Raiders captain Elliott Whitehead (2RF $533,700) will feature in just his second match of the season and boy does Canberra need him.

He averaged 52.3 SuperCoach points last season.

5PM: Both Manly and Canberra remain 1-17 for their clash at a wet Brookvale in the first match of Friday Night Football.

Ricky Stuart has thrown in one late change with Emre Guler (FRF $409,400) starting in the front row and Josh Papali'i (FRF $464,300) dropping back to the bench.

It comes after some big changes on Team List Tuesday saw Chevy Stuart dropped and Albert Hopoate (CTW $465,400) moving to fullback.

The suspension of Sea Eagles star back-rower Haumole Olakau’atu opens the door for Toafofoa Sipley (FRF $512,500) to come into the side on the bench and Ethan Bullemor (FRF/2RF $367,000) rocketing into the starting 13.

EARLIER: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Friday night’s NRL clashes - Sea Eagles vs Raiders and Broncos vs Roosters.

All four teams are extremely SuperCoach relevant but there are serious injury concerns surrounding a number of key players.

The Broncos have big question marks over Payne Haas and Kotoni Staggs due to knee injuries, while the Roosters have lost Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to a calf injury and have a number of players in doubt or aiming to return.

Manly skipper Daly Cherry-Evans is right to go after successfully downgrading his charge at the NRL judiciary, while Elliott Whitehead is a certain starter for the Raiders after successive calf injuries.

THREE CHEAPIES AXED

We know Ricky Stuart is volatile, but axing three cheapies in one week is strong areas even for him. Simi Sasagi (CTW $285,300) and Chevy Stewart (CTW/FLB $216,700) were the two most popular cheapies last week, but both have missed the 17.

However, they are probably holds given they haven’t made much cash yet, in the hope they can jag a spot for the round 13 bye. On the other hand, James Schiller (CTW $468,000) has done his job in making $230,000. So it’s time to either downgrade to a fresh cheapie (David Armstrong is the best of the crop this week even though it’s a week early) or upgrade to a keeper (it’s hard to go past Reuben Garrick here).

BUY

Reuben Garrick – ‘Wait a week’ was the advice on Garrick last week with the Manly star facing a BE of around 150. You, Dear Reader, know what happened next with Garrick scoring two tries, kicking six goals and scoring 145 points. With only one ‘bad’ game to his name (38 points against the Titans) and four scores of 70+, Garrick is a great price for arguably the best CTW in SuperCoach over the last five years. Manly are bad for the byes missing rounds 13 and 17, but grab Garrick now and provided he avoids injury you’ve one of your top-five CTWs locked away.

HOLD

* Tom Trbojevic - I can understand those jumping on Trai Fuller, really I can, but I do not understand those selling the guy with the second-most points at the fullback position in order to do it. He may have let you down with the armband last week, but he has also scored 80+ in five of eight outings and scored a lazy 165 against the Raiders last time he played them.

SELL

* Ethan Strange - Strange has plateaued after a strong start to the season. With Jamal Fogarty out, Strange is now the chief organiser at the Raiders and it’s just not his jam at this stage of his career. The trade to Garrick costs just $100,000.
