NRL draw 2023 analysis: Every club’s schedule rated, the big winners and losers

The Raiders just snuck into finals in 2022, but they’ll be no excuses for them next year after receiving a dream draw. SEE ALL THE WINNERS AND LOSERS.

The 2022 NRL draw has been cruel to some clubs and kind to others. How did your club fare?

Our NRL experts rate every club’s season schedule.

BRONCOS

The Broncos have been given a bitter-sweet draw that will test their resilience as they plot a finals revenge mission in 2023.

They have a dream start with eight of their first 12 games at Suncorp Stadium, including a historic round-four blockbuster against new rivals the Dolphins.

The Broncos will play finals also-rans the Dragons, Tigers and Titans and newcomers the Dolphins in the first seven rounds.

But they must start well, because they will play 14 games against teams who made the top-eight last year — the most of any NRL club in 2023.

Their run home is difficult, with clashes against finals teams the Roosters, Cowboys, Eels, Raiders and Storm in the final six weeks.

BULLDOGS

A tough initiation for new coach Cameron Ciraldo with his club to play 12 matches against this year’s finalists. This includes a horror four game stretch between round 5-8 when they play North Queensland, South Sydney, Parramatta and Cronulla. Among the teams they play twice includes Manly, Warriors, Eels, Sharks, Raiders, Titans, Knights and South Sydney. Belmore will host two matches against the Tigers in round three and Brisbane in round 20. Canberra is the only top eight side they play in the final six weeks.

They have three byes in 10 weeks – the first in round 13.

GRADE: C

COWBOYS

AFTER shocking the NRL last season by rising from 15th to the preliminary finals, the Cowboys have a chance to start 2023 on fire.

Despite becoming one of the NRL’s top teams, North Queensland hasn’t been hit with a tougher draw next year.

They will face top eight teams from 2022 in only 10 games, as opposed to Brisbane’s 14 matches.

And the Cowboys have a dream start to the season, with only one top eight team in the first eight rounds – Canberra to start the season.

They will have a testing time throughout the Origin period but only have to leave Queensland once in the final seven rounds.

GRADE: A

DOLPHINS

THE new franchise, statistically, has one of the better draws of the 2023 season.

Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins play just 10 matches against top-eight teams from 2022. Only the Raiders, with eight games, have a kinder draw against finals teams.

Their first five weeks offer hope of a promising start. While the Roosters in round one is daunting, the Dolphins will fancy their chances of beating Canberra (home), Newcastle (away), Broncos (home) and Dragons (away).

The Dolphins have a long road trip to Perth against the Knights in round 23 and will play a historic clash against the Broncos at the Gabba in round 18.

The NRL’s 17th team will play eight games at Suncorp Stadium, three home matches at Redcliffe’s Moreton Daily Stadium and one fixture on the Sunshine Coast against the Eels.

The long, 27-round season will test their depth.

GRADE: B

DRAGONS

A round one bye is not ideal but coach Anthony Griffin has a prime opportunity to push for a contract renewal with the Dragons playing the Titans (twice), Brisbane, Sharks and Dolphins in their first five weeks. The draw gets a bit tougher with 12 games against 2022 finalists. This includes a stretch between round seven and 15 where they play the likes of the Roosters (twice), Canberra, Cowboys, Panthers and Rabbitohs. Other teams they play twice include the Dolphins, Warriors, Tigers, Sharks, Rabbitohs and Canberra.

GRADE: C+

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin.
Dragons coach Anthony Griffin.

EELS

Their start of the season is set up beautifully in terms of travel. They don’t leave Sydney until round eight but their opening five games are tough featuring Storm, Sharks, Manly, Panthers and Roosters. Their middle part of the season is where they have an easier schedule with matches against Canterbury, Manly, Dolphins, Warriors and Titans between round 15-20. Play 11 matches against top eight teams but have to play the likes of Melbourne, Penrith, Roosters and Cowboys twice.

Won’t need to rest anyone in the final round as has been the trend of some clubs with the Eels having the bye.

GRADE: B

KNIGHTS

Solid start for under-pressure coach Adam O’Brien. Play only the Raiders from this years top eight in their opening six games before a tough stretch of games against Penrith, Cowboys and Parramatta between round 7-9. Have the bye during Magic Round and finish the season with five of their last eight games at home. Play 11 matches against the top eight teams but only face Raiders, Penrith and Cronulla twice. Have two games against the likes of the Warriors, Dolphins, Tigers and Bulldogs.

GRADE: B

PANTHERS

Aren’t afraid of playing anyone. The only time they leave NSW in their opening nine weeks is to play the Raiders in Canberra. Tough draw for the back to back champions who have 12 matches against their fellow top eight sides. Have games against Eels, Cowboys, Roosters, Storm, Rabbitohs all twice Finish the year with touch matches against Parramatta and Cowboys but both matches will be at home. Their final bye comes in round 19 meaning they have a two month stretch of games heading into the finals.

GRADE: B-

RABBITOHS

The biggest winner of the entire competition with the introduction of three byes with the Bunnies receiving their weekend of rest at the most gruelling points of the season in rounds 16, 20 and 26. However, the Rabbitohs may need them. Their opening five rounds are arguably the toughest in the competition. They start the year at PointsBet Stadium against Cronulla (away), then they tackle the Panthers (BlueBet), Roosters (Allianz), Sea Eagles (Accor) and then Storm (Accor). Across the entire season they also face the Storm, Panthers and Roosters twice.

GRADE: C

RAIDERS

Start the season with three road games in the opening month including their first two games in Queensland against the Cowboys and Dolphins. Have arguably the best draw of any club with the Raiders playing just eight games against their fellow top eight sides – the fewest of any - and of those they play the Sharks twice. They don’t play top eight sides in consecutive matches. Their other double up matches are against the Dolphins, Knights, Broncos, Dragons, Bulldogs, Tigers and Warriors. Byes are spread nicely throughout the season in round eight, 16 and 20.

GRADE: A+

ROOSTERS

Strong chance of leading the competition after the first two rounds. They open with The Dolphins away and then back home against the Warriors - the first of three straight home games at Allianz Stadium. Then it gets harder for the Chooks with a road trip to Melbourne and then Cronulla to face the Sharks. The negative is that they are one of only a few teams to receive the stiff task of playing premiership heavyweights the Rabbitohs, Storm, Eels and Panthers twice.

GRADE: C

SEA EAGLES

A second round bye is not the best timing and the rest of the draw is tough. Play 13 matches against teams in the top eight – the second most - including facing five of those teams twice (Parramatta, Penrith, Storm, Sharks, Roosters). Other teams they play twice include Canterbury, Knights and Tigers. Overall a considerable task for new coach Anthony Seibold to try and have the Sea Eagles back into a top eight force. Finish the year with matches against the Warriors, Bulldogs and Titans which could aid their finals push.

GRADE: E

SHARKS

The Sharks mission to become a stronger force than their second-place finish in 2022 will face a stiff test from the outset.

Their opening month includes three away games in their first month of the season. They start at home against the Rabbitohs in round one but then tackle last year grand finalists the Eels (CommBank), then the Raiders (GIO) followed by a Sunday night local derby at Kogarah against the Dragons in round four. Their first bye comes in round six, however in a test of their fortitude at the business end their final bye is in round 17 - with 10 games remaining. The positives? They play 10 games against top-eight sides from last season - only the Raiders have a better draw.

GRADE: C

STORM

Melbourne fans won’t have to wait long to get stuck into Roosters turncoat Brandon Smith, who will return to AAMI Park in round 6.

The Storm’s 2023 redemption quest has been given a boost by a mostly favourable draw.

After a disappointing week one finals exit, the Storm will only have to face 2022 top eight teams in 11 games next year.

They have to play the Eels, Roosters and Panthers twice, but get to finish the regular season with a string of favourable games.

The Storm will finish the 27-round season with matches against the Raiders (home), Dragons (away), Titans (h) and Broncos (a) – which could help them mount a late finals charge.

GRADE: B

TIGERS

It won’t take fans long to learn if the Tigers are something more than the easy beats of previous years. They will launch their new era under Tim Sheens with back-to-back home games at Leichhardt Oval against the Titans and Knights and then over to Belmore against the Dogs; three matches the Tigers must circle as wins. Why? Their next month is a shocker with road trips to face the Storm, Broncos and Eels. Additionally they face big guns the Storm twice, Eels twice and Penrith only once.

GRADE: C

TITANS

THE Titans have been gifted a dream draw to bounce back into finals contention – but they won’t want to make a slow start to 2023.

After crashing into the bottom four last season, Gold Coast has been given a great opportunity to get back into the top eight mix next year.

The Titans will only face 2022 top eight teams in five of the first 18 rounds next season. In total, they only have 11 matches against last season’s finals teams.

However they will finish the season with six of their last eight games against this year’s finals contenders.

That means they will want to be in the top eight mix before a tough finish to the year.

GRADE: B

WARRIORS

After two years stuck in Australia due to Covid, the Warriors finally get to enjoy a fully-fledged home-and-away campaign.

Under new coach Andrew Webster, the Warriors have a handy draw, playing four top-eight sides from the 2022 season twice - the Roosters, Sharks, Raiders and Cowboys.

The Kiwi outfit will play the lowly Knights twice and the Bulldogs once in the opening six weeks, giving them a golden opportunity to strike early with some wins to keep pace with the front-runners.

As is always the case with the Warriors, consistency is the challenge and they face a horror month from rounds 7-11 with clashes against big guns the Cowboys, Storm, the Roosters and Panthers.

But their run home is as good as it gets - no clashes against 2022 playoff teams in the final six weeks of the regular season.

GRADE: C

NRL 2023 DRAW: THE 13 GAMES YOU CAN’T MISS

1 GRAND FINAL REMATCH

Eels v Panthers, Round 4

The NRL have purposely scheduled this blockbuster one month into the new season to give the competition a fresh boost of interest after the excitement of the opening rounds has subsided. The western Sydney rivals will meet for the first time since Penrith smashed the Eels in the 2022 decider. Parramatta will carry that pain until they meet again. It’s a match that will dominate talkback discussion and panel shows like NRL 360. This will also be Ryan Matterson’s first game back from his three game suspension to start the year.

2 BENNY’S BABES TACKLE BRONX

Dolphins v Broncos, Round 4

Here we go. Watch the master Wayne Bennett start needling and prickling his old club with jibes in the press at least a fortnight before their historic first meeting in round four. Bennett is determined for The Dolphins to make a statement that they’re far from the smallest fish in Queensland. The Dolphins bid to knock off the Broncos will be one of the highest TV-rating games of the season. There’s so many storylines here: Bennett v Walters, Milford v Reynolds, Tabuai-Fidow v Walsh...so good.

3 SALMON’S STICKY SITUATION

Panthers v Raiders, Round 5

This will be the first time that Jaemon Salmon plays Ricky Stuart’s Raiders since the head coach was suspended for his “Weak Gutted Dog” comments directed at the Penrith utility. The build-up will be intense. And not only because of Salmon and Stuart. But because the Raiders and Panthers have an increasing hate for each other born out of the Green Machine’s internal belief that the premiers show little class in celebrating their victories.

Ricky Stuart created headlines in 2022 when he took aim at Jaemon Salmon.
Ricky Stuart created headlines in 2022 when he took aim at Jaemon Salmon.

4 SIEBS V BENNY

Sea Eagles v Dolphins Round 15

Take it as read, the old fox Wayne Bennett would’ve been the last bloke cheering the return to the NRL of Anthony Seibold to the head coaching ranks with Manly. Bennett’s distrust for Siebold goes back two years, when the veteran coach was fingered for allegedly manoeuvring behind the scenes to oust Siebold from his job at Souths. The premiership-winning veteran has called bulls--t on the claims – and he has never forgotten it.

5 A BONE TO PICK

Bulldogs v Panthers Round 21

The Bulldogs have Panthers DNA ripping through their veins due to their 2023 coaching and player buys and there’s an old saying in the fight game that styles always make the best of fights. Phil Gould, Cameron Ciraldo, Viliame Kikau, Matt Burton, Tevita Pangai Jr, Corey Waddell and Braidon Burns have all spent time inside the Panthers walls and will use every piece of know-how to upset the premiers. And for an extra dash of spice, will the Dogs have lured Stephen Crichton or Spencer Leniu to Belmore for 2024, by the time this game comes round?

6 SAY CHEESE

Roosters v Storm Round 6

Let’s take the odds of about $1.01 that Brandon Smith will be wound up like never before to usurp his former club, the Storm. Remember too, Smith hardly left in the best of circumstances with reports that the “Block of Cheese” had worn out his welcome in Melbourne. Oversight or not, Storm coach Craig Bellamy failed to mention Smith when thanking the departing players at the end of Melbourne’s season. Let’s go out on a limb and declare the ever-ready Cameron Munster – who stayed loyal to Melbourne – is the frontrunner to go toe-to-toe with Smith.

7 REED ALL ABOUT IT

Bulldogs v Eels Round 7

Reed Mahoney created headlines when he was sprung catching up with Bulldogs officials at Canterbury Leagues club almost a year to the day. While Eels fans put that to their back of the minds you can rest assured they won’t forget it when Mahoney takes on his former club. Ex-Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett has also joined Parramatta’s coaching staff after a bitter split with his old club.

8 MASTER AND APPRENTICE

Dolphins v Rabbitohs Round 7

There isn’t the lingering bad blood between Wayne Bennett and his former club South Sydney. Both parties have spoken glowingly about each other. Jason Demetriou has bucked the trend of those coaches who struggle after replacing Bennett. But rest assured they may still have the cheeky quip at each other.

It’s always one of the most explosive games of the season... the Roosters and the Rabbits. Picture: NRL PHOTOS

SIN BIN CUP

9 Roosters v Rabbitohs Round 3

Just when we thought this rivalry could not get any spicier their last clash descended into chaos which resulted in a record seven sin-bins. South Sydney won the elimination final match 30-14 but there were wild scenes with Roosters lock Victor Radley binned twice. This followed on from last years explosive match which erupted when Latrell Mitchell clocked Joey Manu high.

TIGERS OUT FOR ROBBERY REVENGE

10 Tigers v Cowboys Round 12

The Tigers threatened legal action to overturn one of the biggest officiating blunders seen in recent time. The Tigers were robbed of a much-needed two competition points when they were penalised for an escort which allowed Valentine Holmes to kick a match winning goal. The bunker intervened after a captain’s challenge. The matter did not get to the courts but left a bitter taste for the Tigers faithful.

VAL READY TO DIVE IN WITH SHARKS

11 Sharks v Cowboys Round 9

Valentine Holmes has become public enemy No.1 against the side he helped deliver a premiership to. Holmes denied he dived to milk a penalty which denied Cronulla a certain try in their week win finals match. The Cowboys centre would go on to kick the match winning field goal in 92 minute epic battle.

WILL ENGLISHMAN RETURN TO HAUNT RAIDERS

12 Tigers v Raiders Round 14

Provided John Bateman lands at the Tigers next season this clash will be spicy. The Tigers are in the midst of signing off on a transfer fee to Batemen’s club Wigan. He left Canberra after being denied an upgraded deal and then took aim at the club and coach Ricky Stuart.

SIMS TO HOOK IN AGAINST DRAGONS

13 Dragons v Storm Round 25

Tariq Sims fell out of favour with coach Anthony Griffin and was told by the club there was no long-term future there. That was despite Sims still being an Origin player. He started the season in reserve grade before being snapped up by the Storm. Will play with a point to prove no doubt.
